Description

The Honeywell MPS80 is a surface mount contact with terminals that is ideal for industrial and commercial applications. You have the option to purchase the MPS80 in your choice of white or brown. The white version of the surface mount contact is part number MPS80WGW and the brown version is part number MPS80WGB. The MPS80 contact can be used to protect any door, window or other type of opening. The surface mount contact includes the actual contact and the corresponding magnet. When the protected opening is shut, the contact is in close proximity to the magnet. When the door or window opens, the magnet moves away from the contact causing the alarm. Use the MPS80 to protect any opening that has a moving piece.

The MPS80 features a wide gap of 2”. Therefore, the magnet can be up to 2” from the door or window contact without causing an alarm. As soon as the magnet gets further than 2” away from the contact, the alarm will activate. Most residential contacts have a gap of only 1/2”. The advantage of a wider gap is that you can use the MPS80 on openings that have some give and don’t shut completely tight. For instance, an outside fence or gate may move slightly in the wind. If you had a contact that had a smaller gap, the magnet would move far enough away from the contact to trigger an alarm when the wind blew even though the gate or fence didn’t actually open. As false alarms are a major nuisance that can result in expensive fines from your police department, this would be a big problem. However, by using the MPS80 contact, your fence or gate can move a little without causing an alarm. The Honeywell MPS80WGW or MPS80WGB will only trigger an alarm when there is a real break-in.

The Honeywell surface mount contact has terminal screws which you will use to make your zone connection. Simply wire your (2) conductor alarm wire from the hardwired zone on your alarm control panel to the terminals on the MPS80 contact. The contact itself uses an internal reed switch to detect an alarm. The reed switch is a Form A, SPST, normally closed contact that has a rating of 300mA at 30VDC. The Honeywell MPS80 also includes spacers for unique openings that require the magnet and contact to be at varying heights so that you can install them to be flush. Also, the MPS80 includes mounting screws for installing the contact.

Large Magnet Spacing Gap!
Submitted on 08/14/2020 Alarm Grid

The Honeywell MPS80 is a commercial-grade hardwired surface mount door and window contact sensor. It uses terminals for connecting the wires from the panel. As a door and window sensor for commercial or industrial use, the Honeywell MPS80 allows for a larger magnet spacing gap of up to two (2) inches. This can really come in handy for certain applications. It can even be used nicely in an outdoor environment, provided that you use insulated wires. This is a really versatile and easy-to-use sensor that can certainly work well with your hardwired alarm system. We give the Honeywell MPS80 a 5-Star rating.

There are many positive aspects for the MPS80 that we really appreciate. The wiring terminals allow for easy connections, and they make the installation very straightforward. The wide, 2-inch magnet spacing gap is a major plus, as it allows the sensor to be used with a greater selection of doors and windows. We like the fact that the sensor can be used in an outdoor environment if needed. Just make sure to use insulated wiring if used outdoors. Spacers are included so that the sensor can be used with doors where the magnet and sensor are at different heights. Mounting hardware for the Honeywell MPS80 comes included.

There are not many downsides for the Honeywell MPS80. Like any hardwired sensor, you will need to run a wire from the panel to the sensor. This may be difficult for a DIY installer who isn't used to running wires. As this is a surface-mount contact, it will be visible on the outside of the door or window. This can be a minor issue if the user is concerned about achieving an aesthetically pleasing installation. But these downsides are extremely minor, and they do not stop us from giving the Honeywell MPS80 a 5-Star rating.

Good: Terminals Allow for Easy Connections, 2-Inch Magnet Spacing Gap, Can be Used Outdoors, Spacers & Mounting Hardware Included

Bad: Requires Wiring, Visible From Outside of Door or Window

Bottom Line: 5 Stars
