The 5839 is a wireless bidirectional alpha keypad that is used in conjunction with a 5883 transceiver. The 5839 should be used as an auxiliary keypad in addition to one or more wired keypads. It should not be used as the only or primary keypad. In non-addressable systems, the number of wireless keypads that can be used is unlimited. In addressable systems, refer to the table on the next page for limitations on the number of keypads that may be addressed for each family of security systems. For the following controls, the 5839 is compatible only with the revisions indicated: Control Panel

The keypad returns to its inactive state if no keys are pressed for 30 seconds. After activation, pressing the [,] key displays the current status whenever desired. The 5839 cannot be used to program a control panel (an alpha keypad hard-wired to the control is required).

The 5839 is designed to be wall mounted, mated to its mounting plate. The mounting plate secures the keypad to the wall and holds the battery in place. It is necessary to keep the mounting plate attached to the keypad at all times. Before mounting the 5839 permanently, determine a good RF location by first conducting a Go/No GO test from the panel. Refer to the Go/No GO test mode in the Installation and Setup Guide for the panel. Avoid mounting locations on or near large metal objects, since these can decrease the transmission range or block transmissions.

NOTES: Up to eight (8) 5839s can be used on any one partition. Up to two (2) can be used on each of two partitions. The 5839 is not recommended for use on more than two (2) partitions of a multi-partition system The keypad is compatible with most controls and performs the same user functions as a wired alpha keypad. Activate the 5839 by pressing any key on its keypad, (unless powered by an external power-pack referred to in the POWER CONNECTIONS paragraph).

Separate the keypad from its mounting plate by sliding the keypad up and away from the mounting plate. Install or replace the 9 Volt Ultralife Lithium battery (No. 465) in the battery compartment provided at the rear of the keypad. Ensure that battery female (-) and male (+) terminals are properly oriented with the battery spring clip connections. Reattach the keypad to its mounting plate by aligning the four mounting holes in the keypad case back with the four mounting clips on the mounting plate. Lower the keypad onto the clips. Anticipated battery life is 1.2 years.


Before enrolling the 5839, you must first be sure that a wireless transmitter is already enrolled in a zone OR that a House ID has been programmed into the panel.

c. Press and hold down keys [1] and [3] at the same time for several seconds until all 2 x 16 character locations on the LCD indicate solid black rectangles. This tests all the elements of the LCD display. 3. After all display elements are tested, the Options? prompt at right appears:

To enroll the 5839, program special keys, and enable sounds, perform the following steps: 1. Place the control panel in Go/No-Go test mode. All partitions must be placed in Go/No-Go test mode (Vista32FB controls or higher) before continuing. Wait at least 30 seconds before enrolling and programming the 5839 keypad and its associated 5883 transceiver. NOTE: It is recommended that you enroll the 5839 only from its final mounting position to ensure proper signal strength. Performing step 1 is only necessary when first enrolling the 5839. To modify only the Keys or Sounds options, it is not necessary.

Use this option to enroll the keypad in a 5883 transceiver.

NOTE: If using more than one 5883 transceiver, make
sure you enroll all 5839 keypads in the same transceiver (disconnect others from the system when enrolling). If using the transmitter function for 5800TM compatible devices, you must enroll the 5839 keypads in the transceiver for which the transmitter (TM) function is enabled.

After all programming of the 5839 keypad is complete, it is important to exit the programming mode. To do this, press and hold down keys [1] and [3] at the same time for several seconds until all 2 x 16 character locations on the LCD indicate solid black rectangles, then release. When the following display comes up,

press the # key. You have exited the programming mode.

† The 5839 keypad must be programmed in the control as an alpha keypad with no sounder suppression. Be sure not to assign the same address to more than one device.

c. The prompt at right appears nn (00-15) after selecting “Y” from the , =Done # =End previous prompt. Enter the 5839 keypad address (see table above). , = Accept entry and enroll keypad in 5883. # = Return to previous display. d. The prompt at right appears Waiting for mesg Setup? # = end after pressing [,] from the previous prompt. This display remains for several seconds while the 5839 sends a setup request to the 5883 and receives a reply. In some cases it may be necessary to send additional setup requests by pressing the , key. To abort the enrollment, press [#], which returns the system to the “ECP Addr?” prompt. Otherwise, wait until the prompt at right is displayed.

1. Remove power from the 5883 in the controls cabinet by removing the 4-wire connector. 2. Set DIP switch 1 to OFF and DIP switch 8 to ON. 3. Reapply power and observe that the RED LED turns ON immediately and remains ON. 4. Record the positions of DIP switches 1 through 8. 5. Set the 8 DIP switches to the opposite position recorded in step 4. 6. Set the 8 DIP switches back to the same position recorded in step 4. (All enrolled 5839s have been deleted from the 5883 transceiver.) 7. Place DIP switch 8 back to the OFF position to return to normal 5883 operation.

1. If you determine that the proper ECP address has not been enrolled in the receiver, perform the above deleting procedure and re-enroll all the 5839s in order to avoid erroneous “CHECK” messages. 2. When in active mode, and a change of status of the security system occurs (arming state or fault for instance), the 5839 may take up to 20 seconds to display the change. To obtain a real-time display of system status, press the [,] key.

This display indicates the keypad has received the site ID (nnnnnn) from the transceiver (5883). , = Accept site ID and return to the “Setup?” prompt # = Reject site ID and return to setup menu. 5. a. The prompt at right appears Keys after selecting “N” from the , =Y #=N “Setup?” prompt (step 4.a.).



In a typical wireless configuration, the 5839 is powered by a 9V battery and remains in the inactive state until activated by the press of any key. If you want the keypad to remain active at all times, providing audible and visual indications (without having to be activated by a key press), the 5839 can be powered from an external 110VAC input/9VDC output power pack. The power pack must provide 100mA and have a female output connector with a positive 9V center pin and a 0V shell. These devices are generally available from consumer electronics shops for powering various electronic appliances. It is recommended that a 9V lithium battery be installed as a backup power source when using the 110VAC/9VDC power-pack.

1. Battery – With a low battery condition, a “CONSOLE LOW BATTERY” message is displayed on the 5839 display whenever the keypad is “awakened” from its inactive state. 2. The battery-powered keypad will not go into the inactive state until the case is closed and/or mounting plate is reattached.
