Walk Testing a 5800PIR-RES Wireless Motion Detector

Walk testing a motion sensor tells you how much of the room it is covering. This video shows how to perform the walk test on Honeywell's 5800PIR-RES motion detector.

Hi DYI's. Sterling from Alarm Grade here, and today we're going to show you how to walk-test a 5800 PIR-RES Wireless Motion Detector. We have already installed our motion detector and actually you should normally walk-test before you permanently mount, but we're going to go ahead and show you anyways. First of all we're here in the living room right as you enter the door the motion is picking this up. We chose that corner mount location so that it fully covers the entire room, whether the criminal comes over here or walks to this area of the house, both times we're going to get picked up. When you are choosing your location, obviously you want to get the most maximum coverage that you can and you want to make sure that it's going to cover all the areas of the room. Couple things to pay attention to, our living room does have fan. These motions work on passive infrared. They're actually looking for a change in heat compared to the ambient temperature of the room. The human body is warmer than ambient temperature, when the movement happens, the motion light lights up, and you know you are getting picked up, therefore the fan spinning isn't making a change in heat, you should be good to go. You would want to be careful that you don't install the motion directly above or underneath an AC vent, because that change in temperature as the AC kicks on can cause false alarms. We don't have that situation here, so we're good to go. So with all of that said, you can kind of get a good idea of where to put your motion and then go ahead and walk-test it to make sure it's going to pick up the entire room. All you have to do is you pop the battery out of the device, you put it back in, and then you now have a 10-minute period to do your walk-test. As soon as you put the battery back in, the walk-test mode is started, and now every time you move the motion lights up with a red LED. Once the walk- test mode is done after the 10-minute period that LED will stop lighting up, because in normal operation the motion will only pick up once per three minutes. That's to preserve battery life, so a lot of people have issues. They think that their motion isn't working. It's not that it's not working; it's just preserving battery when you're home, and the system is off, it's not going to continually pick up motion. When you are testing out of the walk-test mode, just make sure that you wait the three minute period, no motion in the room, and then walk into the room and you'll see that the motion does pick you up. So again, while we're still in walk-test, every time I move the LED lights up red. I stop moving the LED goes out. Start moving again, the light comes on. When I'm not moving and the fan is spinning the motion is not picking up any motion. So that highlights exactly how to do a walk-test mode so you can verify and know for sure that your 5800 PIR-RES is going to fully protect your room.
