The Linear WT00Z-1 is a 3-way switch designed to control lighting loads already wired to a switch or dimmer. Traditionally, a load is connected to a master switch. Then a "traveler" wire is run between the master switch and the "slave." The slave (called 3-way switch in this case) can control the load that is physically attached to the master switch through the traveler wire. Well, throw out everything you know about 3-way circuits because the WT00Z-1 breaks all the rules.
The WT00Z-1 only requires a line (120VAC) and neutral from the electrical panel and the switch should be grounded. Instead of wiring a physical traveler wire between the master switch (load attached) and other switches (slave without load), the WT00Z-1 can be associated to master switches/dimmers using Z-wave technology. Z-Wave is a proprietary wireless technology that allows powered devices to communicate with each other for integrated control. By eliminating the traveler wire, the WT00Z-1 can be associated with not only a single master switch but several switches/dimmers.
In fact, the WT00Z-1 can control up to 3 groups of switches and each group may include up to 5 individual Z-Wave devices! You can execute a single button press on the WT00Z-1 for control of group 1. Group 2 will require double button presses. Lastly, group 3 devices will respond to triple clicks on the WT00Z-1. Yes, this means that this single 3-way switch can control up to 15 different light switches and dimmers with varying combinations of single, double and triple clicks! We recommend confining dimmers to their own group for proper dimming capacity.
"Associating" a switch or dimmer to this 3-way switch varies from controller to controller. You will need verify how to associate devices with each other in the Z-Wave controller's user guide. Generally, there is a quick process that includes button presses on the switches. Not all controllers support this type of association.
