Description

The Winland W-S-U is an unsupervised water sensor used with the Winland WB200 and WB350. Each Winland WaterBug comes with one (1) W-S-U, but up to six (6) sensors can be wired in parallel to each WaterBug®. The W-S-U is not a stand-alone product and requires a WB200 or WB350 to operate.

The Winland WB200 and WB350 are collectively known as WaterBugs® and are used with wired alarm systems, or sensors, to monitor for the presence of water in areas that should remain dry. This includes areas around water heaters, sinks, dishwashers, and washing machines. Each WaterBug® can support up to six (6) W-S-U sensor probes connected in parallel. This allows you to monitor a larger area using a single sensor and zone.

When adding W-S-Us to a WB200 or WB350, the total wire length for all sensors should not exceed 100’ (30.48m) using 18-22 AWG twisted pair wiring. The longer the wire run, the heavier the wire gauge that should be used. With its unique design, the W-S-U is not prone to false alarms due to high humidity or mere condensation. It should be noted that distilled water will not cause an alarm activation.

Each W-S-U is rectangular in shape with sensors at each of the four corners. When enough water collects to cause a short across the sensors on the shorter sides, an alarm will be activated. If water collects in such a way that it only causes a short between the two sensor points on the long sides of the W-S-U, no alarm will be signaled. Each pair of water probe sensors that are closest to one another is paired, and a short across either of these pairs is what causes an alarm to be signaled by the WaterBug®. For a better understanding of how this works, check out the product data sheet.

It is important to note that the Winland W-S-U is not a stand-alone device. It must be used in conjunction with either a Winland WB200 or WB350. It comes with a 15' (4.5m) cable that can be used to attach the W-S-U to the WaterBug®. As mentioned above, additional wire can be added if necessary. If you must know which W-S-U caused an alarm, then each W-S-U should be installed with its own WB200 or WB350, and each will require a unique panel zone. This is the only way to know, without looking, which area has flooded when multiple areas are being monitored.
