2GIG GC3: Z Wave Compatibility

Transcript

hi DIYs Joe here from alarm grid and today we're going to talk about z-wave compatibility on a gc3 system now the good news is is the gc3 is compatible with z-wave devices it has a built in z-wave radio right in the unit and it's actually a z-wave plus radio now can work with regular z-wave devices and z-wave plus devices just like many other z-wave controllers if you go online and search for z-wave plus specs you'll see the benefits that you get from using as you a plus controller it gives you a longer communication range between the controller and zio devices has only use less power and there's some other kind of some other cool benefits that you get from using a plus controller now the gc3 you can start rolling Z of devices to it right out of the box it doesn't need monitoring for the z-wave portion of its automation but if you want to get any of the other integration features such as using nest thermostats or my Q garage doors with the system you will actually need alarm comm monitoring and you're going to have to interface those through the app to use those features those third-party systems they are compatible with the system through alarm comm but they're not z-wave and you will need monitoring for that to work z-wave on the other hand you can enroll it right to the system and you can actually activate it and program it into scenes on the controller itself if you do get alarm comm monitoring that app is going to let you program the automation devices in the scenes and rules so if you are planning to get monitoring on your gc3 system it's probably better to wait to get activated before doing all your programming because the local scene programming that you have on the system is not going to pull up into the app when you do get monitored so now let's see how to enroll it of ice on the gc3 system right here we have a linear PD 3 0 0 Z - 2 it's a lamp dimmer on this side of it here this switch port or this plug outlet this is what is controlled by the z-wave function so you learn the sin of the system you can plug a lamp into it and then through the system or through your app you can turn it on and off on the other side you have an always-on power outlet this is so that you don't lose the outlet that it plugs into and it always gives you something to plug into and then right in the middle is your learn button it's a great module to use there's a bunch of different types of these and really they all do the same thing but they're super convenient and very nice to have around the house now right here we have the gc3 the first thing you're gonna want to do on any z-wave device is excluded from the system first the reason being is that z-wave devices actually have programming inside of them and excluding it will clear any from the factory that may be in there if you don't exclude it first and you enroll it it may work but if it doesn't work it could be because of that and if you find that a zero device is given us use excluding it and then re-enrolling it usually can fix and most of the the more basic issues on the device so on the system on the main screen we're going to click on our 2gig symbol enter the installer code we have the default set to one or we have the default on the system which is one two five six one and then we're going to click on smart home settings right here these are all your z-wave settings on the system as I said first thing we're going to do is we're going to unenroll the device so if we click remove devices that's going to put the system into exclusion mode and it's now listening for a device and on this particular device you click the button twice so if we click it twice I found the device and it removed it it removed all the programming from the z-wave device now it's ready to the program into the system so if we go back we're going to go to add devices this puts the system into learning mode it's now listening for a device again we click this twice you'll see it picks it up and it learned it in and then on this screen what you can do is you can rename it now the naming convention is only going to be on the system that won't pull into alarm comm you'll actually have to name the device again and the alarm comm app so don't kill yourself writing down the information or really remembering it from this point because you will have to rename it once you get into the app once that set if you back out to the main z-wave section on the main screen you're going to click on smart home controls and then as this is a switch it's going to come in under lights and we start a module right there and you can control it right from the system again once you get the alarm.com app you're going to be able to control these from your phone or from your computer through the alarm.com logon so that's how to enroll a z-wave device with your gc3 system it is the way of compatible and it has a Z life+ controller built right into the unit thanks for watching if you did enjoy the video feel free to subscribe if you want us to send you an update when we post future videos hit the notification button below if you have any questions head over to the website give us a call or send us an email we see you next time and thanks for watching
