In this video, Joe from Alarm Grid talks about the keypad tamper lockout feature for a Honeywell Lyric Security System. The feature is designed to prevent any "brute force" entry into the system. If you enter too many numeric keys without providing a valid code, then the feature will go into effect.
The keypad tamper lockout feature goes into effect if thirty (30) numeric keys are entered into the panel within a 15 minute period without ever entering a valid code. Once the feature has gone into effect, no additional numeric key inputs will be accepted for the next 15 minutes. Entering any numeric key during this time will result in a long error tone from the panel. The purpose of this feature is to prevent anyone from trying a bunch of random codes to force their way into the system. The feature cannot be disabled.
The most common reason why this feature goes into effect is because the user cannot remember their code, and they try a bunch of incorrect codes in order to get in. Once the feature has taken effect and you hear the long error tone, the only way to operate the system is to use a wireless key fob or the Total Connect 2.0 service. You will also not be able to trigger any system panic functions from the panel.
This lockout also often goes into effect because of a misunderstanding of how the Guest Code or Babysitter Code functions. The Guest Code can only disarm the system if it was the code used to arm the system in the first place. If you give a visitor the Guest Code so that they can disarm the system, make sure that same Guest Code was used to arm the system originally. If you try to use the Guest Code to disarm when a different code was used to arm, then the code will not work.

Hi DIYers. Joe from Alarm Grid, and today I want to talk about the keypad lockout feature on a Lyric security system. The keypad lockout features is a pretty straightforward feature. Basically what it does is locks the keypad if too many buttons are pressed that are not valid. If 30 button entries are entered on the system without entering a valid user code, the system will lock the keypad and not let you enter any user codes for a 15 minute period. When the 15 minute period expires, it'll go back to being normal. What this does is it prevents somebody from sitting in front of the system and just guessing codes until they get it. That's called a brute force attack on your alarm system. This can be a little annoying though because there are some situations where you may find that this actually gets turned on and you'll be stuck trying to disarm the system when you can't actually do so. A common situation where this could occur is if a guest is trying to arm the system before leaving and they don't remember their code exactly, they could keep trying it until the system locks down, and then they'll be stuck. Or if somebody comes in and tries to disarm the system and they don't have the proper code, they could also experience a keypad lockout. Again, 15 minutes passes, this expires. And if you are in front of this system and you accidentally do it, simply powering down the system and powering up will clear this keypad lockout. Also system key fobs, they'll continue to operate and you can additionally arm and disarm the system through Total Connect 2.0 if it is in a keypad lockout. If you do have your system monitored by central station and you do have your report codes enabled, they will receive a code when the keypad lockout occurs and it will be 461 wrong code entry. Also you can check in your system under the event log to see if there's been any keypad lockouts. So what I want to do now is I'm actually going to do a keypad lockout on the system. I'll show you what it looks like, and then we'll go into the event log and we'll see what that looks like too. So you don't see all of this, but basically I'm just going to hit buttons on the system until I get the keypad lockout. I'm going to go ahead and enter a bunch of random button pressed now to lock the keypad and show what this looks and sounds like. So that long tone is telling us that the keypad is locked out, and on the top you'll see we also have ready to arm user code error. If I try to go anywhere on the system using a user code, even a proper one, it's going to beep and not let me do anything. So I do also want to show you guys what the even log looks like for this code, so I'm going to go ahead and just power the system down by unplugging it, powering it back up because that's faster than waiting for 15 minutes to expire, and we'll go into the event log. So now we're rebooted. Let's check out the event log to see what this looks like. Security, Tools, default installer code 4112, events. You'll see right up here we have wrong code entry E461. That is our keypad lock out event. If you have any questions about the keypad lockout, getting your security system monitored, or this feature in general, feel free to reach out to us.
