Description

In this video, Jorge from Alarm Grid shows you helpful troubleshooting techniques for a Honeywell Lyric Alarm System that is using Apple HomeKit. Being able to interface with the Apple HomeKit platform is one of the biggest selling points for the Honeywell Lyric. However, it is important to understand the limitations associated with the integration and understand what features you can expect, and what hasn't been integrated.

The key thing to remember about the HomeKit integration for the Lyric is that it is for security functions only. When you access your HomeKit ecosystem through your iOS device, such as your iPad, iPhone, or Mac Computer, you will only be able to see specific Lyric notifications for enrolled devices that have been programmed with one of a select range of Response Types. These Response Types are all security-based in terms of function, and they are not Response Types you would use with environmental sensors or life-safety sensors.

If you have a security sensor set up with one of the compatible security-based Response Types, then you will be able to access HomeKit through your iOS device and see when that sensor is faulted or triggered. You will know exactly which sensor was activated, and there won't be any question or confusion. But for sensors set up with a different Response Type, including all environmental sensors and life-safety sensors used with the Lyric Alarm System, accessing Apple HomeKit will only display a generic Lyric System Alert. You won't know which exact sensor was faulted, and you won't necessarily be able to take proper action. You won't even be able to tell which type of sensor was faulted. From the information obtainable from 'HomeKit, an activated temperature sensor will look the same as an activated smoke detector, which will also look the same as an activated carbon monoxide gas detector.

That is why it is strongly advised that you continue to use the Total Connect 2.0 platform with your Lyric System, even if you also take advantage of the HomeKit functionality. Total Connect 2.0 will display exactly which sensor on your Lyric System was triggered, as well as the type of sensor in question. This is the best way to know what type of activity your alarm system detected and what action you should take based on the situation at-hand.

Hey, DIYers, Jorge here from AlarmGrid. Today I'm going to be showing you guys how to troubleshoot a Lyric system that's using Apple HomeKit. So first of all, what is Apple HomeKit? How do you get it on the Lyric system? A lot of people, they buy the system, and they automatically expect it to start working with their Apple HomeKit, and all their other HomeKit devices. That actually is not the case. First, 1, in order to enable HomeKit, you are going to need a monitoring company to enable HomeKit on the actual system itself, so it does not work right out of the box with HomeKit. You need to activate the panel with an alarm company, and they have to send out a command to enable the HomeKit feature on the actual system itself. 2, your HomeKit devices do not directly work with the system. They're actually bridged by a HomeKit device, like this iPad, if you have an Apple TV, if you have an iPhone. You're going to be using the HomeKit app to integrate other HomeKit devices, such as lights, locks, thermostats, cameras, doorbells, whatever it may be, you're going to be using the HomeKit app to integrate those HomeKit devices to the Honeywell Lyric. And obviously, like I said, you need to have that feature enabled by a monitoring company on the system. It does not, I repeat, does not work right out of the box. All right, so let's say you guys have HomeKit enabled. Lyric's been working great, your HomeKit's been working great, the integrations are amazing, but then all of a sudden, you start getting, a no response, which I'm going to show you guys in a second, here on the tablet. You open up HomeKit, and your system is showing no response or a unavailable, which sometimes does happen whenever there's a Wi-Fi issue, or something like that. Couple of troubleshooting steps to do. 1, you want to make sure you have HomeKit enabled, which, like I said earlier, you need to have that enabled by the monitoring company. 2, you want to make sure that the tablet, or whatever device you're using HomeKit on is on the same Wi-Fi network, as the Lyric. Something to keep in mind-- the Lyric only connects to 2.4 gigahertz Wi-Fi network. So if you're using, an iPad or your iPhone and your router does 5 gigahertz and a 2.4 gigahertz frequency, it might not be working if it's going to the 5 because the Lyric only connects to 2.4. So always make sure it's connected to the same Wi-Fi network. I'm going to go ahead and open up my tablet real fast, and show you guys some other steps we can go ahead and do. One other thing you guys can do before actually removing the Lyric from HomeKit and resetting HomeKit on the actual system itself, you guys can actually just do a reboot on your modem and reboot the panel itself. So obviously, we're all not new to rebooting a router. You unplug it from power, leave it off for 30 seconds. You can also try rebooting the Lyric system, unplug the backup battery, and unplug the system from the outlet. Or if you're using the LT cable, just use a little barrel connector, remove it, and the system will power down, and then just power everything back up. Sometimes everything just pairs together and everything starts working again. And then, if that still doesn't work, then that's when you're going to need to unfortunately reset HomeKit and remove the accessory from your HomeKit app. All right, guys. So I have my tablet on the Apple HomeKit app. As you see there, I'm getting that issue that some of you guys may get. It says no response, or it might say unavailable. So the very first thing I'm going to do, I'm just going to go ahead, and delete the panel from my HomeKit. It might not be that convenient for you guys to do if you have a whole bunch of scenes and everything set up, but if it comes down to it, this will be probably the last step to troubleshoot after you've checked the Wi-Fi network and everything. So you might have to delete the Lyric and re-add it, and then if you have a whole bunch of other devices, recreate the scenes all over again. All right. So the first thing I'm going to do to delete it. Let me just see here. So there's a little exclamation point right on top of the default room Lyric that says, No Response. I'm going to hit that exclamation point. I'm going to hit the little gear icon in the bottom right. I'm going to scroll that down to the bottom, and there should be a Remove accessory. So I'm going to remove the Lyric system from my HomeKit for now, starting fresh. Again if you have a bunch of other HomeKit devices, those should still be fine. All we did was remove the Lyric. Now what I'm going to do on the Lyric, after I remove it on my Apple HomeKit, I want to reset Apple HomeKit on my Lyric system. So you guys are going to need the master code for this. So I'm going to go to-- let's say you're in the primary screen. This would be the screen security automation, video, smart scenes. You're going to go to Security. When you're in Security, you're going to go to Tools. Now, here, you're going to use a master code, which is a lot different than an installer code. So the master code, mine is defaulted at, 1, 2, 3, 4. From there, I'm going to go to Advance, and then I'm going to go to reset HomeKit. Are you sure? Yes. This is going to basically wipe out any HomeKit that was recently paired to the Lyric system, which, again, we want to do that so that we can start fresh. All right. Now after I reset it, it'll bring me here. I can go ahead and hit the Back Arrow key. If I want to make sure what Wi-Fi network my system is connected to, I can easily go right here to Wi-Fi config. I can go to scan Access Point real fast, and then from there, it should show me a check mark as to what's right next to the network that I'm connected to. So I'm connected to AlarmGrid. Good. So now I know, when I'm connecting my tablet now-- I'm just going to check the Wi-Fi real fast. It's connected to AlarmGrid, so the same Wi-Fi network. Now from here I'm going to go to Add Accessory. And again remember, when you're doing Add Accessory on Apple HomeKit, you're not going to have a code, nothing to scan. So you're going to hit I don't have a code, or cannot scan, and then it should show you the Lyric. You probably are only going to have one Lyric in your house, so when you see that Lyric, you're going to select that. Luckily all the other lyrics didn't pop up on mine, so I'm going to go ahead, and just select that one right there. It's going to ask me to enter in a code. If you look at the Lyric system, it's also asking me to enter in a code. You need to enter in the master code, that's the pairing authorization. So you need to enter in 1, 2, 3, 4. That's my master code. And then it's going to give you that code. Now, from here, you can either use a camera and point it at the Lyric screen, or you can just type it in yourself. 3, 7, 0, 4, 6, 4, 6, 6, and then hit Continue. Remember, yours is going to be different. It's not going to be the same code, so do not try to use that number that you just saw on my Lyric, because it will not work. You need to use the one that's on your Lyric. All right. Now it's going to ask you to go through the whole set up all over again. Where is the Lyric located? And all those other steps, whenever you're setting up a HomeKit device. But these are the basic steps that you guys want to go through whenever you're troubleshooting HomeKit on the Lyric system. If you have any issue with HomeKit, you want to try these steps first. And if this still doesn't work, the last step would be to call your monitoring company and just see what's going on. Maybe they can reset it for you or something like that. If you guys have any other questions, please feel free to email us at support@alarmgrid.com.
