Encrypted door alarm sensors are wireless devices that are used to monitor doors and windows for activity. If anyone opens your door or window, then the sensor will know to alert the system regarding the activity. The unique aspect of these sensors is that they use encryption in all their communication. This makes them nearly impossible for others to hack or takeover wireless. This involves using bi-directional communication, in which the sensor and the panel actually communicate back and forth with each other.

Traditionally, wireless sensors were uni-directional devices. The sensor would send signals to the panel at a particular wireless frequency. The system would readily accept these signals, and no response from the panel was required. This works just fine as far as functionality goes. But wireless security is a concern. A process called RF jamming allows an intruder to block the one-way signals and prevent the device from communicating with the panel properly. The intruder can then fault that zone without having to worry about an alarm occurring.

Encrypted door and window sensors use bi-directional communication. Not only does the panel have to receive the incoming signal, but it also has to send a confirmed response back to the sensor for the command to go through. Encrypted communication occurs across multiple channels, so the signals can never really be truly blocked. This makes them extremely secure for ultimate peace of mind. You do want to make sure that the encrypted sensors you use are compatible with your security system. Also consider that multiple types of encryption exist, with some being more secure than others.

Although encrypted door alarm sensors used advanced techniques for communicating with a panel, their general operation is still largely the same as the older non-encrypted sensors. These devices are commonly referred to as door contacts due to their manner of operation. The typical door alarm sensor will consist of a sensor and a smaller accompanying magnet. The sensor is typically installed on the door frame. Then the magnet is mounted on the actual moving part of the door. The magnet should be aligned with the sensor, and they should be in very close proximity when the door is closed.

Opening the door will cause the magnet to become separated from the sensor. This will release a reed switch inside the sensor. The sensor will recognize this, and it will know to transmit a signal to the alarm system. In the case of encrypted door alarm sensors, the signal is encrypted to prevent any attempts at disrupting the signal. Overall, door contact sensors are extremely effective at what they do, and they make any home or business more secure. And by using encrypted signals, these sensors are virtually impossible for others to attack.
