Description

The Honeywell SC100 Seismic Vibration Sensor is perfect for protecting vaults, ATMs, night deposit safes, strong room doors, free-standing safes, and other objects with a solid structure. It can detect such attacks as those from sledgehammers, explosives, drilling, and mechanical and other types of cutting. It has a built-in end-of-line resistor and a drilling shield to protect sensitive internal electronics from attack.

The SC100 has a compact size, the smallest in the industry, so it can be mounted in small spaces when necessary. In addition to its ability to detect potential attacks through vibration, it also has a built-in temperature detector that will provide an alarm if the ambient temperature exceeds 185°F (85°C) or if the temperature rises more than 6°F per minute. There are four (4) different sensitivity settings, selectable via dip switches.

There are four (4) basic detection parameters that the SC100 monitors. Signal strength or Amplitude, Signal Frequency (aka Spectra), Signal Duration, and Structure of Duration. The input of these four parameters will differ between ambient or background "noise" and an actual attack. The processor in the SC100 uses an algorithm to monitor and analyze these inputs before signaling an alarm. Examples of the types of signals that will cause an alarm on the SC100 are:

  • High Amplitude - Short Duration: This is the type of signal generated by an explosive.
  • Medium to High Amplitude - Medium to High Duration: This is the type of signal generated by mechanical demolition tools.
  • Wide frequency spectra - low amplitude - long duration: This is the type of signal that may be generated by thermal attacks.

Any signals detected will be analyzed by the SC100. The algorithm will take into account known attack methods and cause an alarm under the right set of circumstances.

  • Low Level - designed to recognize low to medium amplitude signals with a long duration. Examples include thermic lance, oxy-arc, or acetylene torch.
  • Medium Level - designed to detect medium to high amplitude and medium to long or intermittent duration signals. Examples include mechanical demolition tools, such as hydraulic jack, hammer, chisel, and other electric power tools.
  • High Level - designed to detect very high amplitude, short duration signals caused by explosives.

The SC100 has a mechanical sensor block. This block takes mechanical inputs, in the form of vibrations, and converts them to electrical signals. These electrical signals are then fed into the signal conditional block and from there the information is sent to the micro-controller for analysis. In this way, the SC100 is much more sophisticated than the usual inertia-style shock sensor.

For applications where there is a likelihood of ambient vibration, such as with gates, chests, mini-ATMs, ticket machines, or vending machines, the Honeywell SC105 is a better choice as it has a smaller detection radius, and will be less likely to activate accidentally due to ambient noise.
