Description

In this video, Joe from Alarm Grid discusses how you can replace a Honeywell 1321 Transformer with a Honeywell 1361 Transformer. This will work because the transformers have the same voltage output rating, while the 1361 supports more currently. The 1361 is a more powerful transformer than the 1321.

Any time you have a 1321 Transformer, you can successfully swap it out for a 1361 Transformer. In fact this may be a necessary action if your system needs extra power. Both the 1321 and the 1361 have a voltage output rating of 16.5VAC. But the 1321 only supports 25VA, while the 1361 supports 40VA. As long as the power load for your system does not exceed 25VA, then you can use these transformers interchangeably. But if the load exceeds 25VA, while still being less than 40VA, then you will need to use a 1361 instead of a 1321. In other words, while you can always swap in a 1361 for a 1321, you cannot always use a 1321 in place of a 1361. You can only do this if the load is 25VA or less.

The 1321 Transformer comes standard with the low VISTA P-Series Panels, including the VISTA 10P, VISTA 15P, and VISTA 20P. Unfortunately, that transformer is not powerful enough to keep both a panel and a communicator running. If you plan on getting your VISTA System set up with a cellular communicator, then you will have one of two options. The first is to get two transformers. One will power the system, and then other will power the communicator. However, an easier option might just be to get a 1361 Transformer. The 1361 Transformer is strong enough to power both a panel and communicator. Additionally, the VISTA 21iP, which includes an integrated IP communicator, comes with a 1361 Transformer. You also get a 1361 Transformer by default with the VISTA TURBO Panels, including the VISTA 128BPT and the VISTA 250BPT.

[THUD] [CLICK] Hi, DIYers. Joe here from Alarm Grid. And today we're going to talk about two of the main transformers that you'll find on VISTA Systems. We have the Honeywell 1321 and the Honeywell 1361. Now both of these transformers work at 16.5 volts with AC, but they have a different power output. The 1321 outputs 25 volt-amps of power, where the 1361 outputs 40 volt-amps of power. Now if you have a VISTA System, you'll have one of these transformers installed. The 1321 comes with the VISTA's 15P, 20P, and other low-end models, whereas the 1361 will come with the 21IP, the 128BPT, the 250, and other larger models of the VISTA system All VISTA systems can use the 1361. Not all VISTA systems can use the 1321, the reason being is that the power requirement for certain setups is more than this single transformer can supply. A situation where that would take place is if you have an older system like the VISTA 20P and you want to install a separate cellular or ethernet communicator to the system. The 1321 won't be able to supply the power to the system and the communicator by itself. In that event, the transformer that comes with the communicator, you'll have to use that to power the communicator. Or that transformer, as it will be a 1361 transformer, you'll be able to power the system and the communicator at the same time in a shared transformer setup. Reach out to us or your security provider to see how to set that up if you are interested in it. Just know that going forward, the 1321 that came with your system, if you have one of these installed, you won't be able to use this to power both the system and an external communicator at the same time. You can swap it out with a 1361 to get enough power to do that. If you have a larger panel such as a 128 or 250, you won't even be able to use the 1321 for those systems, as you'll have to use a 1361. So just know that every system can use a 1361. Not every system can use a 1321. Both these transformers output AC power. What that means is that it's alternating current, which means that there's no polarity on the terminal. So when you connect either of these to your system, whether you use the red wire or the black wire on either terminal and on the power terminals on the system, it won't make a difference, which is nice, because it's just another thing you don't have to worry about. If these were DC, you would have to be concerned about the polarity, but as they're outputting AC, that isn't a concern that you'll have when installing these. If you do have other questions, though, about these communicators, which one you have installed on your VISTA system, how to set up that shared transformer setup with a communicator, or any other power questions about your alarm systems in general, feel free to reach out to us.
