How Do I Add a Z-Wave Light to a Simon XTi or XTi-5?

You can add a Z-Wave light to a Simon XTi or XTi-5 by putting the system into its Z-Wave inclusion mode and activating the inclusion function on the light. The light must be cleared from the network before it can be learned in. The system will need a Z-Wave controller to support the light.

The compatible Z-Wave controllers for the Simon XTi and XTi-5 Systems are the Interlogix Alarm.com Cellular Communicators. Once one of these modules has been installed and activated, the system will be capable of supporting Z-Wave devices. Remember, an alarm monitoring plan that includes cellular service is also needed.

Complete the following steps to add a Z-Wave light to a Simon XTi or XTi-5 System:

1. Access programming. From the home screen of the Simon XTi or XTi-5, click on the gear icon in the lower-right corner. Then use the down arrow to scroll down to "Programming". Click the "Enter" button next to this option. Then provide the system's Installer Code. This code is set to 4321 by default. After providing the code, press the "OK" button to enter into system programming.

2. Clear the light. All Z-Wave devices should be cleared from the network before they are learned-in. Clearing the light first ensures that it can be properly learned-in during enrollment. Many lights are enrolled with a Z-Wave network before they even leave the factory for testing purposes.

To clear the light, select "Interactive Services". Then choose "Z-Wave", and then select "Remove Device". The panel will display the message "Press button on device to remove...". This indicates that the system is in its Z-Wave exclusion mode and that the light can be cleared. With the panel in this mode, activate the inclusion function on the light. Most lights feature an inclusion button on the back. Check the instructions for your particular light. You may need to bring the light close to the panel in order for it to be acknowledged. The panel will display the message "Device # deleted" once the light has been excluded. Then press the "Close" button in the upper-right corner of the screen.

3. Enroll the light. Choose the option "Add Device". The system will display "Press button on device to add...". This message provides indication that the system is in its Z-Wave inclusion mode. Activate the inclusion mode on the light using the same process that was done in Step 2. Again, the light may need to be brought close to the panel for it to be recognized. Once the system recognizes the light, a message will be displayed stating that a new device has been successfully added. A device number for the light will also be displayed. This number can be written down for future reference. Then repeatedly press the "Close" button in the upper-right corner until you return to the main screen.

4. Test the light. The light can be tested right from the Simon XTi or XTi-5 Panel. Press the gear icon in the lower-right corner of the screen. Press the "Control" button next to the "Lights" option. Find the light, and verify that it can be successfully operated from the system.
