Why Does My Qolsys IQ Panel 2 Plus Make a Strange Noise Every Half Hour?

Your Qolsys IQ Panel 2 Plus makes a strange noise every half hour because it is not closed properly. The panel will continue emitting this sound until the panel is properly closed. The system can be a bit tricky to close, but once you get it shut properly, the sound should stop occurring.

The Qolsys IQ Panel 2 and Qolsys IQ Panel 2 Plus both make an "interesting" tamper noise when the system is not positioned properly on its back cover. The personal interpretation of this writer is that it sounds like a "mechanical dolphin" or a "failed dial-up connection". The sound does not last for very long. You will only hear it for a brief second. And it isn't particularly loud or disturbing, but it can be very surprising to suddenly hear this strange sound every thirty (30) minutes. Most users who hear it will want to put a stop to the issue, as it does sound rather unsettling.

The good news is that this noise doesn't really indicate anything wrong with the system. In fact, you won't even get a trouble notification in the message center for the system when the sound occurs. If you can live with the sound, then there really isn't anything to worry about. The Qolsys IQ Panel 2 can be a very tricky system to close properly, and it's possible that you might never get it closed satisfactorily. But Qolsys does offer a big suggestion for closing the panel.

When closing the Qolsys IQ Panel 2 or Qolsys IQ Panel 2 Plus, you want to position the top of the panel first. You can wiggle the top of the system so that the four (4) "latches" are positioned properly. Once that portion is in place, you can secure the lower portion so that both of the bottom tabs "click" or "lock". Lastly, make sure that the top of the panel is indeed fully secure. Lock any remaining connections so that none of the four upper latches are loose.

This process can be easier said than done, so it's recommended that you avoid opening up the panel if possible. Remember that the IQ2 can be shut down using a menu option, and its communicators (IP and cellular) are already built-in. You should almost never need to open the panel after the initial installation. The most common reason you would need to open the Qolsys IQ Panel 2 is to replace the backup battery. This is only done every few years.

If you find that you simply cannot get the panel to close properly, then you can disable the system's tamper cover from within programming. To do this, start from the main screen of the system, and press the small grey bar at the top. Choose Settings > Advanced Settings > Installer Code (default 1111) > Installation > Security and Arming > Panel Tamper. Disable that option to stop the sound. Please note that once you do this, the panel will no longer respond to being opened.
