What Happens to an Interlogix Simon XT When Internet Goes Down?
Nothing happens to an Interlogix Simon XT when the internet goes down. The Interlogix Simon XT cannot use an IP connection to communicate. The system can only utilize cellular service or a telephone connection. We strongly recommend using cellular service with the Simon XT System.
The Interlogix Simon XT arrives as a fairly limited alarm system. Without any add-ons, it can only support POTS (plain old telephone service) communication. At this time, GE/Interlogix does not offer any official IP communicator for the Simon XT System. This means that there is no possible way for the system to use a WIFI or ethernet connection. So if the internet goes down, it is not going to affect the Simon XT in any way at all.
However, POTS communication is seen as an outdated and poor communication path for alarm systems. It is quite slow, it can easily be tampered with, and it does not allow an alarm system to sync with any interactive services. Overall, POTS communication is the single most limited monitoring option available, and it is simply not suitable for most modern applications.
For that reason, we encourage users to obtain cellular service for their alarm systems. Unlike both IP and POTS connections, cellular service is almost always readily available, and it is nearly impossible to be tampered with. Cellular service is fast, and it will not be affected by powered outages. Without a doubt, it is the most reliable communication path available.
Additionally, cellular service will allow the Simon XT System to sync with Alarm.com. This is a special interactive service that allows a user to arm and disarm their system, check the status of sensors and control Z-Wave devices. By using the Alarm.com Mobile App, these actions can be performed from virtually anywhere in the world.
