What Is a Day Zone (Group 05) Used For on a 2GIG GC Touch?

A Day Zone (Group 05) on the 2GIG GC Touch functions like a perimeter zone when the panel is armed but provides trouble alerts instead of alarms when the panel is disarmed. This zone type is normally used to monitor sensitive areas like medicine cabinets or liquor cabinets during the daytime.

The 2GIG GC Touch (available in AT&T LTE and Verizon LTE versions) supports Group 05 Day Zones, which provide heightened security in both armed and disarmed states. When the system is disarmed, a faulted Day Zone triggers an audible trouble alert and on-screen message until it is acknowledged, similar to a sensor tamper. When the system is armed, the same zone causes an immediate burglary alarm with no entry delay.

How a Day Zone Works

When your GC Touch is armed in either Stay or Away mode, Day Zones function identically to Perimeter zones (Group 03), triggering an instant alarm if violated. The unique behavior occurs when the system is disarmed. Instead of simply showing a fault like standard perimeter sensors, a Day Zone violation while disarmed causes a trouble alert sound and display that must be acknowledged. Depending on your monitoring configuration, this trouble condition may also be reported to the central station.

Common Day Zone Applications

Day Zones are ideal for monitoring areas that require awareness but not necessarily a full alarm response during occupied hours when the system is usually disarmed. Typical uses include medicine cabinets, liquor cabinets in homes with minors, gun safes or storage areas, office supply rooms in commercial settings, and pool gates or other child safety zones. The trouble alert serves as a notification that someone has accessed the protected area without creating the urgency and response of a full burglary or panic alarm.

Day Zone vs. Perimeter Zone

Both Group 05 Day Zones and Group 03 Perimeter zones trigger instant alarms when the system is armed. The key difference appears when the system is disarmed. Perimeter zones typically show a fault and may produce a door chime, if enabled, allowing normal use of doors and windows with a simple notification that does not require acknowledgment.

Day Zones behave differently when the system is disarmed. They remain under continuous supervision and will generate either an alarm or a trouble condition that requires acknowledgment whenever the zone is opened. This makes door and window sensors programmed as Day Zones especially useful for monitoring restricted or sensitive areas.

On the 2GIG GC Touch, Day Zones provide reliable monitoring for areas that must be tracked at all times, even when the system is disarmed. This sensor group is assigned during enrollment through Settings, accessible only when using the Installer Code, which is 1561 by default. If you need help configuring Day Zones or other sensor settings, contact the Alarm Grid support team at support@alarmgrid.com or call during business hours.
