About the Panel Motion Detector

The Panel Motion Detector on the IQ Panel 5 (available in AT&T LTE and Verizon LTE) uses the panel's built-in camera to sense movement in front of it. When enabled, it creates an independent zone that falls into your zone order, and it can trip once every four minutes. People add it so the panel can notice activity near itself without mounting a separate motion sensor, which is handy for simple presence awareness on your security system.

There is one very important thing to understand before enabling it. The Panel Motion Detector is for activity monitoring and automation only, placed in Group 25, and it will not create an alarm condition. It does not act as a security motion detector, so it will never trip the siren or report a burglary. Its real use is things like activity notifications through Alarm.com or triggering an automation, such as turning on a light when motion is seen. It is disabled by default, which is why you turn it on deliberately, and it is not evaluated for UK or CE and EN Grade 2 installations.

Before You Begin

The Panel Motion Detector is in the Installer Settings, which require the Installer Code (1111 by default) or Dealer Code (2222 by default). The steps below use the Installer Code. Since it relies on the panel's camera, make sure the panel is mounted where its view is not blocked. Remember that this is an activity and automation tool, so if you need motion that actually arms and triggers an alarm, use a dedicated security motion sensor instead.

Enable the Panel Motion Detector

1. Swipe down and touch Settings. Swipe down from the top of the screen to open the Settings Tray, then touch SETTINGS.

2. Touch Advanced Settings and enter your Installer Code. Touch ADVANCED SETTINGS, then enter your Installer Code (1111 by default). The Dealer Code (2222) works here too. The panel advances automatically after a valid code.

3. Touch Installation, then Installer Settings. Touch INSTALLATION, then open INSTALLER SETTINGS and find the Panel Motion Detector setting.

4. Enable the Panel Motion Detector. Toggle the Panel Motion Detector on. The panel adds an independent activity motion zone using its camera, set to Group 25 for activity monitoring and automation. Toggle it off any time to remove the zone.

Tips

Because motion can only trip once every four minutes, the Panel Motion Detector is meant for general activity awareness rather than tracking every movement. Position the panel so its camera faces the area you want to watch, since anything out of its view will not register. If your goal is intrusion protection that arms and sounds the alarm, pair this with a dedicated security motion sensor, since the panel detector handles only activity and automation.
