How Do I Enable the Smart Energy Optimizer on the IQ5 Hub?

To enable the Smart Energy Optimizer on the IQ5 Hub, swipe down and touch Settings, then touch Smart Energy Optimizer. This feature shifts energy usage to off-peak hours and reduces usage during costly on-peak hours for any thermostat already connected to your entire home system.

What the Smart Energy Optimizer Does

The IQ5 Hub (available in AT&T LTE and Verizon LTE) includes a Smart Energy Optimizer icon right on the code-free Settings page, alongside Display, Temperature, Status, and Automation. Its job is to shift a connected thermostat's energy usage toward off-peak hours and reduce usage during on-peak hours, which are the times of day when electricity typically costs more and grid demand is highest.

This feature is only useful if you have at least one Z-Wave thermostat added to your system, since it works by adjusting thermostat behavior around peak and off-peak windows rather than controlling anything else on the security system. If you haven't added a thermostat yet, this is a good moment to do that first, since the Smart Energy Optimizer has nothing to optimize without one.

How to Enable the Smart Energy Optimizer

1. Swipe down from the top of the screen. This opens the Settings Tray with quick controls.

2. Touch Settings. This opens the main Settings page, which is accessible without any code.

3. Touch Smart Energy Optimizer. This opens the energy optimization settings for any thermostats connected to your system.

4. Turn on the optimizer for the thermostat you want to manage. Once enabled, the panel begins shifting that thermostat's energy usage toward off-peak hours automatically.

Why Peak and Off-Peak Hours Matter

Many utility companies charge more for electricity during certain hours of the day, typically late afternoon and early evening when demand across the grid is highest. Running a thermostat aggressively during those hours costs more than running the same amount of heating or cooling earlier or later in the day. The Smart Energy Optimizer is designed to take advantage of that difference automatically, nudging your thermostat's schedule so that heavier heating or cooling happens during cheaper off-peak windows rather than the most expensive part of the day.

If the Optimizer Doesn't Seem to Be Doing Anything

If you've enabled the Smart Energy Optimizer but don't notice any change in thermostat behavior, first confirm a Z-Wave thermostat is actually enrolled and communicating properly with the panel, since the feature has nothing to work with otherwise. It's also worth remembering this is a gradual shifting of energy usage patterns rather than an instant, dramatic change, so subtle adjustments to when your thermostat ramps up or down are more likely than an obvious, immediate difference in comfort or temperature.

Setting Realistic Expectations

It's worth understanding what this feature is and isn't before turning it on. The Smart Energy Optimizer isn't a full smart thermostat replacement or a detailed scheduling tool with hour-by-hour customization, it's a simpler, automatic nudge that shifts energy-heavy thermostat activity away from the priciest part of the day. If you want granular control over exactly when your thermostat ramps up or down, a manual schedule set up through the thermostat's own controls or the Alarm.com app will give you more precision than the optimizer's automatic behavior. The Smart Energy Optimizer is better suited for households that want a hands-off way to trim energy costs without building and maintaining a custom schedule themselves.

How This Fits With Other Thermostat Features

The Smart Energy Optimizer works alongside, not instead of, your thermostat's normal Mode, Fan, and schedule controls. You can still manually adjust temperature, switch between heat and cool, or set the fan to run continuously, and the optimizer simply layers its own peak-hour adjustments on top of whatever else you've configured. If you have multiple thermostats added to your system, the optimizer can typically be enabled or reviewed per thermostat, so a thermostat in a room you rarely use can be treated differently than one in a space you're in constantly.

Enabling the Smart Energy Optimizer on the IQ5 Hub helps shift your thermostat's energy usage toward cheaper off-peak hours automatically on the IQ5 Hub.
