What Does Internet Available vs. Unavailable Mean on IQ Panel 5?

Internet Available on the IQ Panel 5 means the panel can communicate outside your home, and Unavailable means it cannot. You can find the reading under Wi-Fi Information on the About page, and it takes only a moment to read. It helps separate a router problem from an internet service problem.

What the Internet Field Means

The IQ Panel 5 (available in AT&T LTE and Verizon LTE) shows an Internet reading of Available or Unavailable in the Wi-Fi Information section of the About page. The manual describes it as whether the panel can communicate outside the home. In plain terms, it answers one question: can the panel actually reach the internet, or is it only talking to your router?

That distinction matters because your security system depends on the WIFI path to reach Alarm.com. A panel that is joined to your WIFI network but cannot get past your router is connected in name only.

How to Find the Internet Reading

1. Swipe down from the top of the screen. This opens the Settings Tray with quick controls.

2. Touch Settings. This opens the main Settings page.

3. Touch Advanced Settings. This prompts you to enter a code before continuing.

4. Enter your code. The Installer Code, default 1111, the Master Code, default 1234, or the Dealer Code, default 2222, all provide access to the About page.

5. Touch About. This opens the system information page showing Battery, Software, Hardware, Patches, Cellular, Z-Wave, PowerG, Wi-Fi Information, and Internal Storage details.

6. Scroll down to the Wi-Fi Information section. This section sits below the Z-Wave and PowerG details.

7. Find Internet in the list. It shows Available or Unavailable, just below the Speed reading.

What Available Means

Available means the panel can communicate outside your home. Traffic is making it from the panel, through your router, and out to the internet. This is the reading you want to see, and it confirms that the WIFI path is working end to end rather than stopping at your router.

What Unavailable Means

Unavailable means the panel cannot communicate outside your home. The panel may still be joined to your WIFI network, and the Connection field may even show Connected, but nothing is getting through to the internet. That points to a problem somewhere between your router and the outside world, such as an internet service outage, a modem that has lost its connection, or a router that needs to be restarted, rather than a problem with the panel itself.

Why Connection and Internet Are Separate Readings

Connection and Internet are two different questions. Connection tells you whether the panel has joined a WIFI network at all. Internet tells you whether that network leads anywhere. A Connected reading with Internet showing Unavailable is a very common pairing during a provider outage, because your router and your WIFI keep working locally while the service behind them is down. Checking the SSID and Speed fields at the same time helps confirm the panel is on the right network and has a healthy local connection.

What to Do When Internet Shows Unavailable

Start by checking whether anything else in your home can get online. If your phone or computer on the same network cannot load a page either, the problem is your internet service, and restarting your modem and router is the usual first step. Unplug the modem, wait a short time, plug it back in, and let it fully start before restarting the router. If other devices work normally and only the panel shows Unavailable, run the WIFI Test from the System Tests menu on the panel and review the connection settings. Go to Advanced Settings, Installation, Devices, then Wi-Fi to confirm the connection. If the reading does not return to Available, contact Alarm Grid support so we can help.

How This Affects Your Monitoring

The panel uses dual-path communication, sending over both WIFI and cellular, so an Unavailable reading on the WIFI side does not automatically mean your system has lost contact with your monitoring center. The cellular path continues to operate as the second route as long as the cellular radio is active. Even so, you should not leave the WIFI path unavailable for long, since dual-path protection only works when both paths are healthy. The Dual Path test in the System Tests menu is the best way to confirm the full route to Alarm.com once your internet is back.

Knowing what Internet Available and Unavailable mean on your IQ Panel 5 helps you quickly tell a router problem from an internet service problem on the IQ Panel 5.
