Will My Honeywell L5210 Work w/ SmartThings?
Yes, your Honeywell L5210 will work with SmartThings. This is done by making the L5210 a secondary Z-Wave controller, with the SmartThings Hub is set as the primary. All Z-Wave devices paired with the L5210 will be pushed to the SmartThings App. The L5210 must have an L5100-ZWAVE installed.
By setting the L5210 as a secondary Z-Wave controller, you can operate your Z-Wave smart home devices through both Total Connect 2.0 and Samsung SmartThings. But one important thing to note is that you cannot use system triggers to activate scenes through SmartThings. For instance, it is not possible to have the SmartThings Hub activate a scene when the L5210 is Armed or Disarmed. However, you can still do this through Total Connect 2.0.
On the same note, you cannot have any SmartThings functions trigger scenes that are established through the L5210 or Total Connect 2.0. In other words, you basically need to choose whether you want a Z-Wave device to work with scene control through either SmartThings or Total Connect 2.0. The advantage to using the L5210 as a secondary controller is that all your Z-Wave devices can be controlled through the SmartThings App.
Another advantage of using the SmartThings Hub as the primary controller is that the SmartThings Hub is compatible with Z-Wave Plus technology. When a Z-Wave Plus device is paired with the SmartThings Hub, it will experience a longer range and battery life than if it were paired with the L5210. Instead, a Z-Wave Plus device paired with the L5210 will only have the range and battery life expected of a classic Z-Wave device. Basically, if you want a Z-Wave Plus device to achieve its maximum potential, it should be paired with the SmartThings Hub.
But keep in mind that by pairing a Z-Wave device with the SmartThings Hub, you will not be able to use it with automated smart scenes through the L5210 or Total Connect 2.0. Only a device paired with the L5210 can be used with system smart scenes and TC2 smart scenes. The device will still be capable of being controlled through the SmartThings App, but it will not be able to integrate with SmartThings scenes. Still, the SmartThings App will become a convenient place to individually control all Z-Wave devices.
If you want to set up the L5210 as a secondary Z-Wave controller for SmartThings, it is an easy process. The SmartThings Hub and the L5210 should be in relatively close proximity. Open the SmartThings App, and choose "+ Add a Thing". Next, turn your attention to the L5210. From the main screen, choose Automation > down arrow > Tools > Advanced Tools > Master or Installer Code (defaults are 1234 and 4112) > Learn. This should pair the L5210 with the SmartThings Hub as a secondary controller. All Z-Wave devices enrolled with the L5210 will be pushed to the SmartThings Hub.
