Does the IQ5 NS Security Panel Support Z-Wave SmartStart?

The IQ5 NS does not support SmartStart Z-Wave enrollment. All Z-Wave devices are added to the IQ5 NS using the Autolearn Z-Wave method through the IQ Installer app. Open the app, navigate to Automation Devices, touch Add Device, select Autolearn Z-Wave, and put the device in pairing mode.

SmartStart Is Not Available on the IQ5 NS

The IQ5 NS (available in AT&T LTE and Verizon LTE) is a screenless security system panel that manages all Z-Wave device enrollment through the IQ Installer app. SmartStart is not available on the IQ5 NS. All Z-Wave devices must be added using the Autolearn Z-Wave method, which requires the device to be powered on and in pairing mode during enrollment.

How to Add Z-Wave Devices to the IQ5 NS

1. Open the IQ Installer app and connect to the IQ5 NS panel. The Configuration menu opens in the app.

2. Navigate to Automation Devices, touch Add Device, then select Autolearn Z-Wave. The panel enters listening mode for Z-Wave devices.

3. Touch Start Autolearn and put the device in pairing mode. Refer to the device's manual for the pairing procedure. The app detects and enrolls the device automatically.

The Autolearn Z-Wave method works with the same Z-Wave devices that SmartStart supports. Any Z-Wave Plus compatible lock, thermostat, light switch, dimmer, or garage door controller can be added to the IQ5 NS using Autolearn. The main difference from SmartStart is that the device must be physically accessible and powered on during enrollment — you cannot pre-register a device before it arrives on site. For large installations with many devices, plan the enrollment order before starting so each device can be activated and paired one at a time.

SmartStart on Other IQ5 Panels

SmartStart is available on the IQ Panel 5 and IQ5 Hub. The IQ Panel 5 supports both QR code scanning and manual DSK entry for SmartStart enrollment. The IQ5 Hub supports manual DSK entry only. If SmartStart is important to your installation workflow, the IQ Panel 5 or IQ5 Hub would be the right choice. You can also add home automation devices and control the IQ5 NS through the Alarm.com app once Z-Wave devices are enrolled. If you have questions about which panel is right for your installation or need help setting up Z-Wave devices on the IQ5 NS, the Alarm Grid support team can help you choose the best approach for your specific devices and setup.

The IQ5 NS uses Autolearn Z-Wave for device enrollment rather than SmartStart, which is available on the IQ Panel 5 and IQ5 Hub on the IQ5 NS.
