The PowerG Signal Strength test goes further, showing the actual dBm reading from the sensor instead of just a category, and it tracks that reading over time, graphing it against the ambient noise floor in your installation environment.
A PowerG daughter card must be installed in the panel to access either test, since PowerG communication runs through that add-on card rather than the panel's built-in radios. For UL, cUL, and EN Grade 2 installations, the signal strength reading is required to show as Strong, so this test isn't just diagnostic information for enthusiasts, it's part of meeting certification requirements on monitored systems.
How to Run the PowerG Signal Strength Test
1. Swipe down from the top of the screen and touch Settings. This opens the Settings Tray, then the main Settings page.
2. Touch Advanced Settings and enter the Installer Code. The default Installer Code is 1111, though your account admin may have changed it to something else, like 2222.
3. Touch System Tests, then PowerG Test. This opens the interface for pinging PowerG sensors and reading their signal strength.

4. Select a sensor and touch the arrow to view PowerG Signal Strength. This switches from the basic Strong/Good/Poor rating to the detailed dBm view for that specific sensor.

5. Touch Start Test to query the current signal strength. The panel pings the sensor and returns its live dBm reading along with the 24-hour average, plotted against the ambient noise floor.
Interpreting the Results
A lower dBm number, closer to 0, indicates a stronger signal, while a more negative number indicates a weaker one, since dBm is a logarithmic scale where signal strength decreases as the number moves further below zero. The manufacturer recommends a minimum signal to noise ratio of 7 dB, meaning the sensor's signal should read at least 7 dB above the ambient noise floor for reliable communication. If a sensor's reading sits close to or below that threshold, it's at higher risk of missed events or supervision failures.
If a sensor shows a weak reading, try changing its orientation between vertical and horizontal, moving it to a different part of the door or window frame, or relocating the security system panel itself if multiple sensors in one area of the home are all reading weak. Re-run the test after each change to confirm whether the adjustment improved the reading before moving on to the next sensor.
If Signal Strength Stays Weak
If a sensor still reads Poor or shows a weak dBm value after repositioning, check for sources of RF interference nearby, such as large metal appliances, mirrors, or other wireless equipment operating on a similar frequency. Concrete or metal-reinforced walls between the sensor and the panel can also significantly reduce signal strength. In persistent cases, consider adding a wireless repeater to extend PowerG range to that part of the home, or contact Alarm Grid support for help diagnosing whether the issue is the sensor, the daughter card, or the installation environment.

Seasonal changes, new furniture, a freshly installed mirror, or even a neighbor's new wireless router can shift the RF environment around a sensor that tested fine at installation. This is especially worth doing after any renovation work, new appliance installation, or if you've added several new PowerG sensor devices to the same system, since a crowded RF environment can affect sensors that were previously reading strong.
