How Do I Check PowerG Signal Strength on the IQ5 NS Panel?

What the PowerG Test Shows on the IQ5 NS

The IQ5 NS (available in AT&T LTE and Verizon LTE) includes a PowerG Test that pings a PowerG sensor and returns its signal strength. You can view the average signal strength over the past 24 hours, and touch the arrow next to the strength descriptor to see additional detail about that specific sensor's connection.

A PowerG daughter card must be installed in the panel to access this test, since PowerG communication runs through that add-on card rather than the panel's built-in radios. For UL, cUL, and EN Grade 2 installations, the signal strength reading is required to show as Strong, so this test isn't just diagnostic information, it's part of meeting certification requirements on monitored systems. Since the IQ5 NS has no display, this entire process happens through the IQ Installer app on your phone or tablet rather than on the panel itself.

How to Run the PowerG Test

1. Open the IQ Installer app and connect to the panel. The app communicates directly with the IQ5 NS over Bluetooth or Wi-Fi to load its configuration and testing menus.

2. Enter the Installer Code when prompted. The default Installer Code is 1111, though your account admin may have changed it to something else, like 2222.

3. Navigate to System Tests, then PowerG Test. This opens the list of enrolled PowerG sensors available for testing.

4. Select a sensor and touch Start Test. The app pings the sensor and begins the signal strength query.

5. Review the signal strength result. The app displays a rating of Strong, Good, Poor, or No Signal for the selected sensor.

6. Touch the arrow next to the strength descriptor for more detail. This opens a detailed signal information page for that sensor.

Interpreting the Results

A Strong or Good rating means the sensor is communicating reliably with the panel. A Poor rating or No Signal result means the sensor's connection is unreliable enough that it may miss events or trigger supervision failures over time. Because certification standards require a Strong reading on UL, cUL, and EN Grade 2 installations, any sensor reading below that on a monitored system should be addressed rather than left as is.

If a sensor shows a weak result, try changing its orientation, moving it to a different part of the door or window frame, or relocating the security system panel itself if multiple sensors in one area of the home are all reading weak. Re-run the test after each change to confirm whether the adjustment improved the result before moving on to the next sensor.

If Signal Strength Stays Weak

If a sensor still reads Poor after repositioning, check for sources of RF interference nearby, such as large metal appliances, mirrors, or other wireless equipment operating on a similar frequency. Concrete or metal-reinforced walls between the sensor and the panel can also significantly reduce signal strength. In persistent cases, consider adding a wireless repeater to extend PowerG range to that part of the home, or contact Alarm Grid support for help diagnosing whether the issue is the sensor, the daughter card, or the installation environment.

Why Regular Checks Matter

Signal strength isn't static. Seasonal changes, new furniture, a freshly installed mirror, or even a neighbor's new wireless router can shift the RF environment around a sensor that tested fine at installation. Checking PowerG signal strength periodically, not just when a sensor starts acting up, helps you catch a slow decline before it turns into a missed alarm during an actual break-in or fire. This is especially worth doing after any renovation work, new appliance installation, or if you've added several new PowerG sensor devices to the same system, since a crowded RF environment can affect sensors that were previously reading strong.
