How Do I Edit a Z-Wave Device's Fields on the IQ5 NS Panel?

To edit a Z-Wave device's fields on the IQ5 NS, open the IQ Installer app, enter the Installer Code, navigate to the Z-Wave Devices page, then select the device you want to change. Update the name or automation type and save the changes in the app, with no re-pairing needed at all.

What You Can Edit on a Z-Wave Device

The IQ5 NS (available in AT&T LTE and Verizon LTE) lets you go back and adjust a Z-Wave device's name and automation type at any time after it's been added, without needing to remove and re-pair the device. This is useful if you renamed a room, relabeled a light fixture, or want to change a simple local automation rule, like switching a lamp from the Evening schedule to the Front Door trigger. Since the IQ5 NS has no display, all of this happens through the IQ Installer app rather than on the panel itself.

The editable fields are the same ones you see when you first add a device: the device name and the Automation dropdown, which offers Night, Evening, or Front Door as simple local rules that run directly on the panel without needing home automation through Alarm.com. The device's underlying node ID and network association aren't something you edit here, since those are set during pairing and tied to the Z-Wave network itself rather than the app's display settings.

How to Edit a Z-Wave Device's Fields

1. Open the IQ Installer app and connect to the panel. The app communicates directly with the IQ5 NS over Bluetooth or Wi-Fi to load its configuration menus.

2. Enter the Installer Code when prompted. The default Installer Code is 1111, though your account admin may have changed it to something else, like 2222.

3. Navigate to the Z-Wave Devices page. This opens the full list of Z-Wave devices currently paired to the panel.

4. Select the device you want to edit from the list. This opens the device management interface showing its current name and settings.

5. Update the name field or change the automation type. Touch the name field to enter a new label, or change the automation setting between Night, Evening, Front Door, or no automation at all.

6. Save your changes in the app. The app updates the panel's records and returns you to the Z-Wave devices list, now reflecting the updated name or automation setting.

Why the Device Name Matters Beyond the App

A device's name isn't just cosmetic. It's what appears in Alarm.com notifications, on any automation pages, and in any local automation rule tied to a sensor name, like the Front Door trigger, which specifically looks for a sensor named Front Door to function correctly. If you rename a sensor that a Front Door automation depends on, that automation rule can break silently until the names line up again, so it's worth double checking any linked automations after a rename.

If Changes Don't Save

If the app doesn't reflect your update after saving, back out of the Z-Wave Devices page and check the list again, since some changes take a moment to sync to the panel. If the device shows as unresponsive or the app won't load its current settings, the device may have dropped off the network entirely, which points to a signal or battery issue rather than an editing problem. In that case, a full security system signal check on that device, or re-pairing it if it was excluded, is a more direct fix than repeatedly trying to edit its fields.

Editing Devices Added via SmartStart

If a device was originally added through SmartStart rather than the standard Add Device flow, its name and automation type are still editable the same way through the IQ Installer app, since SmartStart is just a different enrollment method, not a separate category of device. The SmartStart Provisioning List tracks devices through their inclusion process using their DSK code, but once a device reaches the Included state, it appears in the regular Z-Wave device list and can be renamed or reassigned to a different automation rule exactly like a device added through standard pairing. This is worth knowing if you manage a mix of devices enrolled different ways over time, since you don't need to remember which method was used to find and edit any given device later.

Editing a Z-Wave device's fields on the IQ5 NS keeps your device names and simple automations accurate as your household setup changes over time on the IQ5 NS.
