How Do I Safely Power Down the IQ Panel 5 Alarm System?

To power down the IQ Panel 5 safely, swipe down and touch Settings, then Advanced Settings, and enter your code. Touch Power Down, wait for the panel LED to turn off, and then disconnect the power. Never pull the power without this sequence, or you risk corrupting the panel data and settings.

Why a Safe Power Down Matters

The IQ Panel 5 (available in AT&T LTE and Verizon LTE) has both an AC power supply and a backup battery, so simply unplugging it does not turn it off. Pulling power or disconnecting the battery without powering down first can corrupt the panel's data or cause a failure, which is why the panel includes a dedicated Power Down option. Using it protects the programming on yoursecurity system and keeps the panel healthy.

You would power down before replacing the backup battery, relocating the panel, or doing any work that requires removing power. If you only need to move the panel a short distance, you can leave the battery connected and just unplug the power supply, which avoids a full shutdown. For anything that involves disconnecting the battery, always run the full Power Down first.

Before You Begin

Power Down is found in Advanced Settings, which you can reach with any of your codes: the Master Code (1234 by default), Installer Code (1111 by default), or Dealer Code (2222 by default). The steps below use the Master Code as the example. Plan to have the panel disarmed, and know that powering down takes the system offline, so your monitoring station will not receive signals until the panel is powered back up.

Power Down the Panel

  1. Swipe down and touch Settings. Swipe down from the top of the screen to open the Settings Tray, then touch SETTINGS.

  2. Touch Advanced Settings and enter your code. Touch ADVANCED SETTINGS, then enter your Master Code (1234 by default). The Installer Code (1111) or Dealer Code (2222) work here too. The panel advances automatically after a valid code.

  3. Touch Power Down. On the Advanced Settings menu, touch POWER DOWN. A caution popup appears that reads, "Are you sure you want to power down?" and warns that disconnecting the power supply or battery before shutdown is complete may cause data corruption or panel failure.

Touch Power Down to bring up the caution popup.
  4. Press Shut Down. Read the caution, then press SHUT DOWN to begin the shutdown. If you entered the Installer Code (1111) instead of the Master Code, this popup also shows a checkbox to launch the Setup Wizard on the next power up; with the Master Code (1234) there is no checkbox, only the caution and the Shut Down button.

    Press Shut Down to continue.
  5. Wait for the LEDs, then disconnect power. Wait for the panel's LEDs to stop flashing and turn completely off. Once they are off, the panel is fully powered down. Only then unplug the battery first, and then unplug the power supply. Do not disconnect anything while the LEDs are still flashing.

Wait for the LEDs to go off, then unplug the battery, then the power supply.

Powering the Panel Back On

To turn the panel back on, reconnect the power supply and battery, or press and hold the power button on the right side of the panel for about 3 seconds. The panel will boot back up on its own once power is restored. For a safe shutdown, always use the menu Power Down option above rather than pulling power, since only the menu runs the proper shutdown sequence.

Tips

The order is what protects the panel: power down through the menu, press Shut Down, wait for the LEDs to go dark, then unplug the battery followed by the power supply. Skipping the sequence is the most common cause of panel trouble after a battery swap. If you are powering down to replace the backup battery, follow our guide on how to replace the battery in the IQ Panel 5 for the full process.
