How Is the Cellular Module Installed in a 2GIG GC Touch?
The 2GIG GC Touch (available in AT&T LTE and Verizon LTE versions) includes a built-in 4G/LTE cellular module and SIM card that are pre-installed from the factory. Unlike older 2GIG panels that required separate communicators, the GC Touch is ready for dealer activation out of the box.
Understanding the Factory-Installed Cellular Module
The 2GIG GC Touch features a built-in 4G/LTE cellular radio that is integrated directly into the panel at the factory. This includes both the cellular module hardware and a micro-SIM card that is already installed in the internal SIM socket. End users and installers do not need to purchase, install, or handle the SIM card during normal setup. The cellular functionality is ready to use once the system is properly registered and activated.
Activation Through Your Alarm Dealer
When your security system is installed, your alarm dealer handles the registration and activation process. This step connects your panel to your monitoring service and activates the pre-installed SIM card. Once activated, the cellular module enables the panel to communicate with the central monitoring station. Your dealer will configure the system settings and verify that the cellular connection is functioning properly before completing the installation.
For Alarm Grid monitored customers the activation will take place remotely. When you sign up for monitoring with us you'll be asked to provide the panel's IMEI number. This FAQ shows you how to retrieve the IMEI number through the panel's menus. Because you must activate the cellular module to use Alarm.com, the 2GIG GC Touch requires Alarm Grid customers choose a Gold Plan (Self or Full) or higher. For those who only want central station monitoring, without the remote control capabilities, we also offer Cellular Alarm Monitoring.
How Cellular Communication Works
The GC Touch uses WIFI as the primary communication path for connecting to your monitoring service. The built-in 4G/LTE cellular communicator serves as a backup communication path when WIFI is unavailable or unreliable. This dual-path setup ensures your security system maintains connectivity with the monitoring station even during internet outages. For optimal cellular performance, ensure the panel is installed in a location with good cellular coverage, ideally showing a signal level of at least 4 out of 5 bars on the home screen status bar.
Running a Cellular Test
To verify that the cellular module is working properly, you can run a Cellular Test through the panel settings. Tap the Settings gear icon and enter the Installer Code (1561 by default). Navigate to Equipment Management, then System Test, and select Cellular Test. This test checks the SIM status, cellular network registration, and connection quality. The results display whether the cellular connection passes along with the current signal strength.
When Reseating the SIM May Be Necessary
In rare cases where the cellular module is not receiving a signal despite good coverage, 2GIG technical support may recommend reseating the SIM card. This troubleshooting step is not part of normal installation and should only be performed if specifically suggested by technical support. The micro-SIM card socket is located inside the panel behind the rear access cover and is not hot-swappable, meaning the panel must be powered down before accessing the SIM.
The pre-installed cellular module in the 2GIG GC Touch provides reliable backup communication for your security system without requiring any SIM card handling by the end user.
