How Do I Get My Alarm Company to Change My Installer Code?

You do not need to get your alarm company to change your Installer Code. This is because it is possible to change your own Installer Code. You will need to know the current Installer Code in order to do this. Each panel will follow a slightly different process for changing the code.

Although changing the Installer Code on a security panel is a relatively easy process, we generally advise users to simply leave the Installer Code set to its default. This is because the default code can be easily looked up, and forgetting the code can result in a huge inconvenience later. It's also worth mentioning that leaving the Installer Code at its default is not a security risk. This is due to the fact that on many alarm panels the Installer Code can only disarm the security system if it was the code used to arm it in the first place. On other panels, the installer code won't arm or disarm at all. As long as you don't use your Installer Code to arm your system, knowing the default Installer Code for your panel will not help an intruder in disarming it.

Nevertheless, if you do decide to change your Installer Code, the process is quite simple. However, the steps will vary slightly between different types of security systems. Remember, you will need to know the current Installer Code to do this.

Below are the processes for changing the Installer Code on some popular types of wireless security panels:

Honeywell Lynx Touch or Lyric Controller: From the home screen, go to Security > More (if using Lynx Touch) > Tools > enter the current Installer Code (default is 4112) > Program > Installer Code. A keypad will be displayed for you to change the Installer Code. Press "Clear" at the bottom-left of the keypad. Then enter in the new 4-digit code, and press "Done" at the bottom-right corner of the screen. Press the return arrow in the upper-right corner of the screen until you reach the home screen. Make sure to choose "Yes" when the system asks if you want to allow the installer to reenter programming. Your Installer Code has been changed.

2GIG GC3: From the home screen, tap the 2GIG logo in the upper-right corner of the screen. Then enter the current Installer Code (the default is 1561). Then choose "System Configuration", followed by "Panel Programming".

Question 1 (Q1) will allow you to enter a new Installer Code. Enter in the desired 4-digit code. Then click "Return To System Configuration" in the top-right of the screen. Click the back arrow on the left side of the screen. You will be asked to confirm the change. Click the green "Save" button. Your Installer Code will be changed.

Qolsys IQ Panel 2: From the home screen, tap the small grey bar at the top of the screen. Then go to Settings > Advanced Settings > enter current Installer Code (default is 1111) > User Management. You will now be in the User Management Menu. Find the user with the type of "Installer", and click the pencil button to edit it. The Installer will have an ID of 241.

Once on the edit screen, click on the "User Code" field. You can then edit the code. Delete the previous code, and enter in the desired 4-digit code. Then select the field for "Confirm User Code". Delete the old code, and reenter the same 4-digit code as before. Once you have finished, press any part of the blank white area off to the side to exit code entry. Hit the black "Save" button at the bottom. Then press the picture of the house at the bottom of the screen to return to the home screen. Your Installer Code has been changed.
