Is Alexa Compatible with the Lyric Security System?
No, Alexa is not compatible with the Lyric security system. There is currently no command that can be sent through Alexa in order to control or check the status of a Honeywell Lyric Controller. There are also no Alexa Skills that are used for operating or managing a Lyric Controller.
Although Alexa devices are not compatible with the Lyric Controller, Alexa devices can interface with the Honeywell Lyric App. However, despite its name, this app is not designed to operate or manage the Lyric Controller. Instead, the Lyric App is used for controlling Lyric Thermostats and Honeywell IP security cameras. Since Alexa can be used to send commands to the Lyric App, Alexa devices are capable of operating with these devices. In other words, Alexa can connect with Lyric Thermostats and with Honeywell IP cameras. This is done by using the Honeywell Lyric Skill with Alexa.
This can be somewhat confusing for end users. While the Alexa personal assistant can interface with the Lyric App, Alexa cannot manage the actual Lyric Controller itself. It's important to remember that the Lyric App is not an app for the Honeywell Lyric Controller. Instead, it is an app that is used for controlling and managing devices that are commonly used with a Lyric Controller and the Total Connect service, most notably security cameras and thermostats.
However, unlike Alexa devices, Apple Homekit is capable of operating a Lyric Controller. This is currently the only way, other than through the Lyric itself, to use voice commands with the Honeywell Lyric Controller. For this reason, Lyric owners who want to choose a smart service for their home may be better off going with Apple Homekit over Amazon Alexa. That being said, it is possible that Alexa will be provided with an Alexa Skill for managing the Honeywell Lyric Controller sometime in the future. It's also possible that the Alexa Skill would operate through Total Connect, making Alexa-connectivity possible for almost any Honeywell panel.
