How Do I Run Z-Wave Device Testing on the IQ5 NS Panel?

To run a Z-Wave test on the IQ5 NS, open the IQ Installer app on your mobile device and connect to the panel. Navigate to Tests, then select Z-Wave Tests. This test checks communication between the panel and your enrolled Z-Wave smart home devices to confirm proper network operation.

Before You Begin

Before you run a Z-Wave test, make sure you have at least one Z-Wave device enrolled on the IQ5 NS (available in AT&T LTE and Verizon LTE versions.) Z-Wave devices include smart locks, light switches, thermostats, and other home automation products that communicate using the Z-Wave protocol. You will need the Installer Code (default 1111) to access the System Tests through the IQ Installer app. If you have not yet connected the IQ Installer app to your panel, see our guide on setting up the IQ5 NS with the IQ Installer app before proceeding.

Make sure your mobile device is connected to the same WIFI network as the IQ5 NS panel. If your Z-Wave network includes devices that were recently added or relocated, run a Rediscover Network test first to update the communication paths.

Running a Z-Wave Test

The IQ5 NS provides several Z-Wave testing tools accessible through the IQ Installer app. Since the IQ5 NS does not have a touchscreen, all configuration and testing is performed from your mobile device. Follow these steps to run a basic Z-Wave test on your security system.

  1. Open the IQ Installer app on your mobile device. The app is available for both iOS and Android devices. Make sure your phone or tablet is connected to the same WIFI network as the IQ5 NS panel before proceeding.
  2. Connect to the IQ5 NS panel. The app searches for available panels on the network. Select your IQ5 NS from the list and enter the Installer Code (default 1111) when prompted. The app dashboard appears showing the panel status and configuration options.
  3. Navigate to the Tests section. The Tests menu displays all available system tests including WIFI, Sensor, Cellular, Z-Wave, PowerG, and other diagnostic options.
  4. Select Z-Wave Tests. The Z-Wave Tests page loads and shows all enrolled Z-Wave devices with their current status. This page provides access to all Z-Wave testing and diagnostic tools for the IQ5 NS.
  5. Press Run All to test all enrolled Z-Wave devices. The IQ5 NS pings each enrolled Z-Wave device and displays the results. A successful test returns a "Pass" result with a timestamp next to each device. If a device fails, check the device location, battery level, and network routing.

Additional Z-Wave Diagnostic Tools

The Z-Wave Tests section in the IQ Installer app includes additional diagnostic tools beyond the basic device test. Rediscover Network re-maps the communication paths between all Z-Wave devices and the IQ5 NS after you install or move a device. Neighbor Info shows which devices can see each other on the mesh network, and you can press Start Test to query neighbor nodes and then touch the arrow icon to view the list of individual devices each node can see. Counters provides a numerical breakdown of passed and failed commands for each device, and a healthy network should show at least a 98% acknowledgment rate. Advanced Z-Wave Diagnostics gives access to Network Health Test, Repeater Test, and Last Working Route tools for deeper analysis of your Z-Wave network.

Tips

If a Z-Wave device fails a test, try relocating it closer to the panel or to another Z-Wave device that acts as a repeater. Replace low batteries in battery-powered Z-Wave devices, as weak batteries cause communication failures. After making any physical changes, always run Rediscover Network to update the routing table. Adding Z-Wave repeaters, such as smart plugs or in-wall switches, between the panel and distant devices strengthens the overall mesh network. A reliable Z-Wave network ensures that your IQ5 NS communicates consistently with all connected devices. If you use a monitoring service, strong Z-Wave performance also helps your provider receive accurate status updates from your security system. For the most accurate test results, run Z-Wave tests after all devices have been installed in their final locations.
