How Many Z-Wave Thermostats Can the Qolsys IQ5 NS Support?
The IQ5 NS supports up to 40 Z-Wave thermostats. This device limit is set through the IQ Installer app in the Z-Wave Options menu. Since the IQ5 NS does not have a touchscreen display, control your thermostats remotely through the Alarm.com app or a connected IQ Remote PG wireless keypad.
Before You Begin
The IQ5 NS (available in AT&T LTE and Verizon LTE versions) includes a built-in Z-Wave Plus radio that supports home automation devices including thermostats, lights, locks, and garage doors. Since the panel has no touchscreen, all Z-Wave device enrollment and configuration is performed through the IQ Installer app on your iOS or Android device. If you have not yet set up the IQ Installer app, see our guide on setting up the IQ5 NS with the IQ Installer app before proceeding.
In addition to Z-Wave devices, the panel also supports PowerG automation devices. This guide shows a list of Z-Wave and PowerG automation devices that are known to be compatible with the IQ Panels, including the IQ5 NS. In theory, any Z-Wave automation device is compatible with any Z-Wave controller, but some devices may offer special settings or features that are not supported by the panel.
Z-Wave Device Limits
The IQ5 NS supports a maximum of 40 Z-Wave thermostats by default. This is part of the overall Z-Wave device allocation that includes 80 lights, 20 door locks, 21 miscellaneous devices, and 6 garage doors. The total Z-Wave network supports up to 167 devices across all categories. These limits are configurable through the IQ Installer app, though most residential installations will never approach the maximum thermostat count.
Thermostat Control Features
When you add Z-Wave thermostats to your IQ5 NS, you gain remote control through the Alarm.com app. The app lets you adjust the target temperature, switch between heating and cooling modes, control fan settings, and set schedules. If you add an IQ Remote PG wireless keypad to your system, you get the same thermostat control interface available on the IQ Panel 5 and IQ5 Hub, including touch controls for temperature adjustment and mode selection.
Remote Access Through Alarm.com
With an Alarm.com account and a compatible monitoring plan, you can control your thermostats from anywhere using the Alarm.com mobile app or website. The app displays all connected thermostats and lets you adjust temperatures, change modes, and set schedules remotely. This is especially useful for energy management when you are away from home or want to adjust the temperature before arriving.
Compatible Thermostats
The IQ5 NS works with Z-Wave compatible thermostats from manufacturers including Honeywell, Trane, 2GIG, and others. When selecting a thermostat, ensure it supports Z-Wave or Z-Wave Plus protocols for compatibility. Z-Wave Plus devices offer improved range and battery life. The panel supports both battery-powered and hardwired thermostats as part of a complete home automation and security system setup.
The IQ5 NS supports up to 40 Z-Wave thermostats, providing extensive climate control for large homes or commercial applications.
