How Do I Firmware Upgrade a 2GIG GC2e?

You can firmware upgrade a 2GIG GC2e by activating the system with Alarm.com and then having your monitoring provider push down a firmware update. There will likely be a fee as part of the process. Updates can also be performed manually using the 2GIG Easy Updater Tool or Updater Cable.

The good thing about the 2GIG GC2e is that the system will always be on a high enough firmware version to support Alarm.com. This is what makes it possible to have an update sent down to the panel automatically. This is by far the easiest way to upgrade a 2GIG GC2e. Additionally, the 2GIG GC2e can also be updated using the same methods supported by the original 2GIG GoControl! GC2. These include updating via the Easy Updater Tool or the Updater Cable. For information on updating using the Updater Tool, please see this FAQ. Although that FAQ was originally written for the original GC2, most of the same information will also apply to the GC2e. For information on updating using the cable, please see the following video.

However, it is most likely that you will simply activate your GC2e System with Alarm.com, and then the latest firmware will be pushed down to your panel once you have activated. All GC2e Systems can be activated with Alarm.com, you just need to add a cellular communicator to serve as the system's communication pathway. The available communicators for the GC2e are the 2GIG LTEA-A-GC2 AT&T LTE Communicator and the 2GIG LTEV1-A-GC2 Verizon LTE Communicator. Both communicators accomplish the same thing. They just use different cellular networks. You can check coverage maps to determine which network is best for you.

Complete the following steps to upgrade GC2e Firmware through Alarm.com:

1. Activate with Alarm.com. You will need to activate the 2GIG GC2e for monitoring service. Since the 2GIG GC2e can only use cellular communication (no internet protocol), you will need a plan that includes cellular service, such as an Alarm Grid Gold or Platinum Level Plan (Self or Full) or our Cell-Only Plan. You will also need to add a cellular communicator to the system if you haven't already. Both the 2GIG LTEA-A-GC2 and the 2GIG LTEV1-A-GC2 are good options. You will need to provide the IMEI Number for the cellular communicator when you go to activate for monitoring service. You can find the IMEI number on the actual communication module, or you can access it through the menus by choosing the 2GIG logo in the bottom-right corner of the main screen, entering the Installer Code (default 1561), choosing Radio Status XX/XX, and then the IMEI Number will be listed as the Serial Number.

2. Request the update. After you activate, reach out to your monitoring provider, and ask them to push down the latest firmware update. If you are monitored through Alarm Grid, then you can email support@alarmgrid.com to request the update. The fee associated with the Over-the-Air (OTA) update will be applied to your next monitoring invoice. Fees are generally priced at around $3 or less, based on the size of the update file. The fee is collected by Alarm.com for additional cellular data used to download the firmware file. Remember that our business hours are 9am to 8pm ET M-F.

3. Confirm the update. You can easily check the firmware version by starting from the main system screen and choosing Security > Menu > Toolbox > Master Code (default 1111, but usually changed) > Right Arrow (bottom-right corner) > Version. The IMEI Number will be the Serial Number.
