What Wireless Sensors Can I Use with the Honeywell Lyric Controller?
The best wireless sensors to use with the Honeywell Lyric Controller are the Honeywell 5800 Series sensors and the Honeywell SiX Series sensors. Nearly any wireless sensor from one of these two lineups will function perfectly with the Lyric Controller providing you with reliable performance.
The Honeywell SiX Series sensors are designed exclusively for use with the Honeywell Lyric Controller. The SiX Series sensors are unique in two ways. For one, they communicate with the Lyric using a 2.4GHz frequency. This is unlike most wireless security sensors, which communicate with the security panel using frequencies in the MHz range. Thanks to this communication method, SiX Series sensors can be used at a range in excess of 300 feet away from the security panel.
Honeywell SiX Series sensors also feature 128-bit AES encryption. This means that when a signal is sent from the sensor to the panel, a confirmation signal from the panel must be sent back to the sensor. If this confirmation signal is not received, then the input will not be accepted. Many people refer to this as a "digital handshake", and it helps ensure that the SiX sensor cannot be taken over or controlled by hackers.
Unfortunately, the SiX Series lineup is somewhat limited, and it takes more of a "one-size-fits-all" approach for its sensors. For example, there is currently only one SiX Series Motion Detector available. A user will have no choice but to use that sensor for motion detection if they want to use a SiX Series sensor.
Meanwhile, Honeywell 5800 Series sensors have been in use for quite some time. These sensors are extremely reliable, and they are known for being very easy to program with a security system. They communicate with the Lyric using an RF signal at a frequency of 345MHz. This allows for communications approximately 200 feet away from the security panel. If this range is not enough, it is possible to use a Honeywell 5800RP to repeat the signal and effectively double the range.
The 5800 Series sensors do not feature any encryption, meaning that they are less secure than the SiX Series sensors. However, the 5800 Series lineup is incredibly diverse, and users will usually be able to choose between multiple 5800 Series sensors to serve a similar purpose. This can provide more options when deciding which sensors to use. For example, the 5800 Series features at least 12 different door and window contacts, giving users a large number of sensor options for this one purpose.
All of the 5800 Series uni-directional devices, such as door/window contacts, motion detectors, glass break detectors, smoke and carbon monoxide detectors are compatible with the Lyric Controller. However, none of the 5800 Series bi-directional devices such as the 5800RL or the 5800WAVE are compatible with the Lyric system.
