Does the IQ5 NS System Require Professional Monitoring?
The IQ5 NS does not require professional monitoring to function as a security system. It works as a fully capable local alarm without a subscription. But, adding a monthly monitoring plan unlocks remote access, real-time alerts, and optional central station response for enhanced protection.
Before You Begin
The IQ5 NS (available in AT&T LTE and Verizon LTE versions) does not have a touchscreen. All system configuration is performed through the IQ Installer app on your iOS or Android device. The panel communicates over dual-path LTE cellular and WIFI, which enables both local alarm functionality and optional professional monitoring. If you have not yet set up the IQ Installer app, see our guide on setting up the IQ5 NS with the IQ Installer app before proceeding.
Local Alarm Functionality
The IQ5 NS functions independently as a complete security system without requiring any monitoring subscription. When an alarm is triggered, the panel sounds its built-in 85dB siren to alert you and anyone nearby. The system supports PowerG sensors, Z-Wave devices for home automation, and Bluetooth disarming. Since the IQ5 NS has no touchscreen, you manage the system through the IQ Installer app or through compatible keypads and key fobs.
This design makes the IQ5 NS ideal for installations where the main panel is hidden in a closet or equipment room for added security. Users can place wireless keypads in convenient locations throughout the home while keeping the primary control hardware out of sight.
The IQ5 NS is also well suited for high-end homes using whole-home automation platforms such as Control4. In these environments, the alarm panel operates in the background managing sensors and life-safety devices, while the third-party system provides the primary user interface. Benefits of Professional Monitoring
The IQ5 NS works fine as a standalone system, but adding a monitoring plan opens up a few more ways to stay connected to your home. Because the panel communicates over both LTE cellular and WIFI, you get a reliable backup signal path no matter which monitoring option you choose.
With a self-monitoring plan, you'll get real-time push notifications through the Alarm.com app whenever an alarm is triggered, along with remote arming and disarming from anywhere. You decide how to respond, whether that's checking a camera, calling a neighbor, or contacting emergency services yourself. A full monitoring plan builds on that same foundation, adding a professional central station that receives the same alert at the same moment you do and carries out its own confirmation and dispatch process alongside your notification. Either way, your IQ5 NS keeps you in the loop on what's happening at home.
If you plan on signing up for monitoring with Alarm Grid, you'll need to look at the Gold or Self Gold plan or higher. This is because Alarm.com monitored accounts require LTE cellular communication. If you'd like central station monitoring without Alarm.com's remote access or self-monitoring notifications, Alarm Grid also offers a Cellular Alarm Monitoring plan.
What Works Without Monitoring
Without monitoring service, the IQ5 NS provides local alarm functionality including siren activation, entry and exit delays, sensor chimes, user code management with up to 242 codes, and partition support for up to 4 separate partitions. You can add PowerG sensors for long-range encrypted wireless communication, integrate Z-Wave smart home devices, and use Bluetooth for convenient touchless disarming. The LED status indicators on the front panel show armed and disarmed states at a glance. These features operate entirely without any monthly fees or external service requirements.
Understanding your monitoring options helps you get the most value from your IQ5 NS. Whether you choose to use the panel as a local-only alarm or add professional monitoring service, the system delivers reliable security for your home.
