Imagine you and your family are away from home. An intruder decides to take this opportunity to forcefully enter your house. But luckily, they trigger a contact, a motion sensor or a glass break sensor, and an immediate alarm is sent to a central station. They flee the scene immediately.

At first glance, this might seem like a favorable situation. The intruder left your property immediately, the police arrived on the scene shortly thereafter, and any property damage was minimized. But now there is a criminal on the loose, and the police don't necessarily have any leads for identifying the individual. That is where home security cameras can greatly assist with a police investigation. Even just one camera can mean the difference between a successful arrest and an unsolved crime.

A home security camera is exactly what it sounds like. It is a camera that captures footage inside the home for security purposes. A new home security camera is always an exciting purchase. Now you can view exactly what occurs inside your house when you are away. You can even pull up your Total Connect 2.0 or Alarm.com account to view a live feed of your camera. But wait, where are you going to install the device?

Even if you have the best security camera on the market, it won't matter at all if it is installed in a poor location. And while most alarm cameras are easy to install, it can still be very inconvenient to have to break out the tools and remount a camera if you find that its current location isn't the best. Therefore, it's helpful to get a camera's mounting location right the first time. Following some basic tips can help you ensure that you choose the optimal location for your camera.

Start by asking yourself some basic questions. What type of camera is it? If it's an outdoor camera, you will obviously have more options as to where you can place it. How large is its viewing angle? A camera with a larger viewing angle will be able to record across a larger area. How many cameras do you have? If you have multiple camera, you can probably have some set up for specific areas. But if you only have one camera for monitoring, then it should be placed in a location that really counts.

In any case, there are a few general tips to keep in mind regardless of where exactly a security camera is installed. Placing a camera high up is always a good idea, as it will provide a better view of the area. The camera's positioning angle will also play a big role on its overall scope and use. It is also very important to make sure that there are no obstructions in the way of the camera. After all, a camera is no good if there's a large object right in front of it! Some users also find that they prefer to install their cameras in areas that are difficult to access, as it make it less likely that an intruder will destroy the camera. But remember, this may make it more difficult to make adjustments to the camera if needed.

For a single camera set up, placing the camera in location where it can get a good overview of the property is usually a good idea. For outdoor cameras, many homeowners will install one near their front door. Most burglars will attempt to enter a home right through the front door, so placing a camera in this area will surely capture them in the recording. Additionally, an intruder will often have to walk past the the camera to access the back or the side of the house, so you may still record some activity even if the front door is not their ultimate point of entry. Furthermore, a font door camera will allow you to monitor any suspicious activity that may occur in front of your property. Most users ultimately find that monitoring the front door is an absolute must for home video surveillance.

But when a user has the luxury of a multiple-camera setup, where should they place their other cameras? Some users will add a second camera in their backyard. That way, their first camera will keep tabs on the activity in front of their house, while their second camera will monitor the rear. Additional cameras can then monitor the sides of the home and any accessible windows. Some users may also install cameras to cover areas that aren't necessarily seen by the other cameras. In order to maximize your investment, try and make each camera count so that it is recording an area that isn't seen by any others. You may also want cameras to monitor pool areas, guest homes and detached garages if applicable. Finally, try and choose areas that a potential intruder will be forced to pass if they want to access other areas of the property.

But what about indoor cameras? There are certainly a few good places that come to mind. Having cameras monitor any main entrances is always smart, since they will be virtually guaranteed to capture anyone who enters the home. It is also wise to place cameras in large central areas that will see activity in many different areas of the home. Some users also place cameras in hallways, as intruders will probably need to pass through them in order to access other areas. If you have a home with multiple stories, it is usually a good idea to have a camera on each level for maximum coverage. And finally, if you have any particularly valuable items, such as a safe, you may want to have a camera monitoring that area directly.

Remember to check any camera after you have installed it to make sure that it is covering a useful area. You may still need to adjust its angle, or maybe its mounting location wasn't very effective after all. Make any adjustments or changes if needed. Pretty soon your home will be nicely monitored, and you and your family will enjoy great peace of mind with your new home security cameras!

Honeywell has recently announced a change in the way that their Total Connect 2.0 video surveillance feature will work and the change will be implemented on or about April 19th (next Wednesday).

Currently, if you have Honeywell AlarmNet IPCAMs, you have the ability to view them remotely and have them record 10-second video clips based on a change in pixelation if you have the right Total Connect 2.0 service plan. Using a mobile device running the Total Connect 2.0 app, you can log-in and view up to 6 IPCAMs per TC2 location from wherever you are as long as the cameras are powered on and connected properly to the internet and you can watch any recorded videos.

Using the totalconnect2.com website, you can use the Video module to view the cameras remotely and you can also set up more advanced settings such as 10-second video clip recordings and alerts when video clips are captured. These clips are customized by the user and you can use the wrench icon on each camera to set up the areas of detection for each field of view and the sensitivity selections for how much movement is needed to trigger a clip. You can also setup schedules to determine when you want the cameras to record clips and when you only want live viewing capability with no recording happening.

Once you have the camera recording settings configured properly so that the cameras are recording clips of movement that you feel is important while ignoring other movements that aren't important, a new video clip will be stored to your TC2 account and will be available as a event in the Events & Notifications module. Currently, each TC2 location allows storage of up to 500MB of clips and auto-deletes the oldest available clip once the limit is reached. You do also currently have the option to "lock" certain clips that you don't want to be auto-deleted.

Here's where things change (on or about) April 19th, 2017...

While only Honeywell/AlarmNet IPCAMs currently work with Total Connect 2.0, Honeywell is (with great anticipation!) working on a new line of next generation cameras that will integrate with Total Connect 2.0 (we will have more details on the cameras at a later date) and they should be available sometime towards the end of this year.

New Seven Day Storage for Recorded Clips

In anticipation of the next generation cameras, Honeywell is transitioning all existing Total Connect 2.0 video accounts to a new 7 day plan where clips will only be available through the TC2 website/app for 7 days. The 500MB storage will go away and any clip that is older than seven days will be automatically deleted. Once the change is implemented, any currently recorded clip will be set to expire seven days later with the oldest clips being deleted first.

Regular non-TC2 video events will continue to be stored for 90 days,which is how the service works now, and first-in, first-out logic is employed when deleting the older clips.

No More Locking of TC2 Events

In addition to the changes to the video storage feature, Honeywell is removing the ability to "lock" a TC2 event (all events inclsuding security and video) so that you won't be able to save any event beyond the normal expiration (90 days for security and 7 days for video once the change is implemented).

The existing lock feature that allows you to permanently store a TC2 event/video clip:

They are providing a year grace period so that any currently locked events will stay locked up until April 15th, 2018 when all locked events will be deleted. We encourage all Total Connect 2.0 users to start saving all locked video clips outside of TC2 if you want them to still be available after April 15th of next year.

Also, we encourage all TC2 video users to start setting up email alerts with video clip attachments through their TC2 account so that each recorded clip can be saved/archived through email so that the clips are available beyond the new seven day limit.

While we are excited about the new cameras that are coming and the upgrades to Total Connect 2.0 and the video service, some of these changes may have an adverse affect if you don't update your account now to adjust for these changes.
