Resideo announced this week that the 6148 keypad family is discontinued upon stock exhaustion. The official technical notification confirms that the 6148, 6148ICON, 6148EX, and 6148SP are all going away. If you need a similar, budget-friendly alternative look no further than the 6150.


The 6148 was never a glamorous keypad. It didn't have a touchscreen. It didn't talk to you. It was just a simple, reliable Fixed English keypad that did exactly what it was supposed to do. And honestly, that's what made it great.

The 6148 was the kind of keypad you could explain to your grandmother over the phone. You pressed buttons, the system responded, and that was that. No learning curve. No software updates. No wondering if the display would freeze. Back when touchscreens were still a novelty, most homeowners just wanted something that worked. The 6148 worked.

The 6148ICON was the same idea but with pictures instead of words. Little icons showed you what each button did. Some installers loved it. Others thought it was unnecessary. But it found its audience with customers who preferred visual cues over text.

The 6148EX added a tamper switch, which made it popular for commercial installations where someone might try to mess with the keypad. The 6148SP served Spanish-speaking customers. Each version filled a specific need in the market.

Now they're all going away because that's how this industry works. Parts become obsolete. Manufacturing priorities shift. Products that served us well for years eventually reach the end of their run.

The good news is that Resideo has recommended solid replacements. The Honeywell 6150 Fixed English Keypad takes over for the 6148, 6148ICON, and 6148EX. It has the same Fixed English display and basic functions, plus four dedicated function keys for quick arming and emergency buttons. The only thing missing is the tamper feature from the 6148EX, so keep that in mind if tamper protection matters to your installation.

For the 6148SP, Resideo suggests upgrading to the First Alert VISTAH3 system with the VISTAHPKP or VISTAHLKP keypads. These offer Spanish and Portuguese language support on a 2x16 alpha display.

If you're still running 6148 keypads on your VISTA system, now is the time to think about stocking up or planning your upgrade. Once the remaining inventory is gone, it's gone for good.

It's strange to get sentimental about a keypad. But the 6148 represents an era of alarm products that valued simplicity and reliability above all else. No apps. No cloud connections. Just a keypad on the wall that lets you arm and disarm your system. There's something to be said for that.

Alarm Grid offers the latest wireless keypads, compatible with IQ4 and IQ Pro panels. The Qolsys IQ Keypad-PG is a simple capacitive touch keypad, while the Qolsys IQ Keypad Prox-PG adds a prox tag reader for easy use. Both keypads offer PowerG's impressive range for reliable communication.

As wonderful as a big, beautiful touchscreen interface is, sometimes you just need to arm or disarm the system and don't want to walk to the panel to do it. Maybe you're entering or exiting through a seldom-used basement door or planning to hang out in the garage when you arrive home. A secondary arming and disarming station can come in handy, for a wide variety of reasons.

Enter the two (2) new PowerG keypads available from Qolsys. The Qolsys IQ Keypad-PG is a basic wireless keypad that allows you to disarm by entering a valid code through the number pad. It has icons for single-touch Night, Away, and Stay arming when secure arming is disabled. When secure arming is enabled, arm using any valid user code.

If you can arm through the touchscreen without entering a code, then Secure Arming is disabled. You can change this setting by tapping the gray menu bar at the top of the screen, above the date and time, then tapping Settings > Advanced Settings > Enter Installer or Dealer Code (1111 or 2222 respectively, by default) > Installation > Security & Arming > Secure Arming. This feature is disabled by default. That means, by default, you can arm the system without entering a valid code.

When we talk about the IQ4 panels, we're talking about the IQ Panel 4, the Qolsys flagship, top-of-the-line, feature-rich touchscreen panel. Also included is the IQ4 Hub, another touchscreen panel with a slightly trimmed-down feature set. And finally, the IQ4 NS rounds out this panel lineup. The IQ4 NS is a budget-friendly option with nearly identical features as the IQ4 Hub, minus the touchscreen interface. All these panels support the IQ Keypad-PG and the IQ Keypad Prox-PG and prox tag arming/disarming. Just be sure the panel has the latest firmware.

IQ Keypad-PG

The IQ Keypad-PG is a stylish capacitive-touch numerical keypad. It has PowerG wireless transmitting capability and offers superior range, military-grade, 128-bit AES encryption, and bi-directional communication with the panel. Four (4) AA batteries are used to power the unit. Only Energizer AA 1.5 Volt Alkaline batteries should be used. The expected battery life is three (3) years. Each alarm system can support up to five (5) keypads.

IQ Keypad Prox-PG

The IQ Keypad Prox-PG has the same features and specifications as the IQ Keypad-PG, with one exception. It supports prox tags. If you're unfamiliar with prox tags, they're small, hand-held devices that allow you to easily arm and disarm the system by presenting the tag to the keypad in the designated space. When you present your valid tag to the keypad while the system is armed, it will toggle the system to a disarmed state. If you present your tag to the keypad when the system is disarmed, it will attempt to arm the system.

Prox tags come in packs of four (4). The included clip allows them to connect easily to a key ring:


If Force Arm is enabled when you present your prox tag to arm the system, any faulted zones will automatically be bypassed and then the system will arm. If Force Arm is disabled the system will refuse to arm until all zones are restored and the prox tag is presented again. Also, when you present a prox tag to the keypad while the system is disarmed, it will first attempt to arm Stay, then if you present the tag again, it will arm Away.

You can verify the Force Arm setting by tapping the gray menu bar at the top of the screen, above the time and date. Then tap Settings > Advanced Settings > Enter Installer or Dealer Code (1111 or 2222 respectively, by default) > Installation > Security & Arming > Force Arm. This feature is enabled by default. That means, if you attempt to arm and any zones are open or faulted, they will automatically be bypassed so the system can arm.

Here at Alarm Grid, we recently learned that the Qolsys IQ Panel 4 supports the Qolsys IQ Remote, but only the most recent iteration. Older Qolsys IQ Remotes are not compatible. If you plan to replace a Qolsys IQ Panel 2 with an IQ Panel 4, read on to see how you can tell the keypads apart.

As of now, only the Qolsys IQ Panel 4 AT&T LTE, Interlogix/GE Compatible version, and the Qolsys IQ Panel 4 Verizon LTE, Interlogix/GE Compatible version are available. The other iterations of the panel will become available in the next couple of months. The only touchscreen keypad that is currently compatible with these panels is the Qolsys IQ Remote, and only the latest version with P/N QW9104-840, at that. Keypads with a P/N of QW9103-840 or below are not compatible. The sticker showing the part number should be on the back of the keypad.

Below, you can see the back of an IQ Remote with the P/N: QW9103-840. This keypad is not compatible with a Qolsys IQ Panel 4:


Looking at the sticker on the back of the keypad is the first way to easily determine whether the IQ Remote will work with the IQ Panel 4 or not. But, what if the sticker has been removed, or the touchscreen keypad has been mounted to the wall and the back side is difficult to access? There is another easy way to tell whether the IQ Remote you have is the older or newer version.

When the IQ Remote was re-designed, the front-facing camera was moved from the upper right corner to the center of the keypad. This was done, in part to better match the look of the Qolsys IQ Panel 2/2 Plus. Checking the location of the camera is the easiest way to determine whether it is a newer or an older Qolsys IQ Remote.

Below you can see one of the original Qolsys IQ Remotes. You can see that the camera is located in the upper right corner of the keypad.

Below is an image of the newer Qolsys IQ Remote, P/N QW9104-840. You can see the camera has been moved to the front center, and in the upper right corner you can see that a microphone has been added:


Checking the camera location is by far the easiest and quickest way to determine if the IQ Remote you have is compatible with the Qolsys IQ Panel 4. It's rumored that a PowerG Touchscreen Keypad is in the works, which, if true will likely make the IQ Remote obsolete given the superior wireless range of the PowerG protocol.

The Qolsys IQ Panel 4 can support up to three (3) IQ Remotes, but it also supports the use of up to five (5) Wireless PowerG Keypads (WS9LCDWF9, HS2LCDWF9, and HS2LCDWF9ENG) and up to two (2) Hardwired DSC Keypads (HS2LCD, HS2ICN) per DSC PG9WLSHW8 PowerG Wired to Wireless translator module. Up to two (2) modules are currently supported per panel, so up to four (4) of the wired keypads can be used. This gives a total of up to 12 remote keypads.

The leading keypad option for the Qolsys IQ Panel 2 Plus is unquestionably the Qolsys IQ Remote. This innovative touchscreen keypad mimics the screen of an IQ2 or IQ2+, and it allows for security and automation control from a second on-site location. But sadly, it lacks a replaceable battery!

To be clear, the Qolsys IQ Remote does have a backup battery. When AC power for the IQ Remote is lost (either due to the transformer being unplugged or an electrical outage), the backup battery will keep it running for several hours. But like any rechargeable battery, the one inside the Qolsys IQ Remote has a limited useful life. And once that useful life is up, the battery cannot be replaced with a new one. This means that the IQ Remote Keypad will need to be plugged in at all times in order to be used. If AC power becomes lost for any reason once this happens, then the IQ Remote will immediately power down. Also, the keypad will then always show a low-battery warning that can never be cleared. While not completely debilitating, it is an unfortunate aspect of the Qolsys IQ Remote device.

When we spoke with Qolsys about this issue, they assured us that the IQ Remote battery is "very long lasting", and a user shouldn't encounter this issue for at least ten (10) years from the initial manufacture date, assuming that the battery is cared for properly. Additionally, the company has stated that they have not received any excessive reports of IQ Remote battery failures since its release more than five (5) years ago. But it's fair to expect that Qolsys might be hearing about this issue more frequently in about five year's time when a large number of Qolsys IQ Remote batteries begin failing! At least most IQ Remote Keypads are not carried or transported around, and most users just leave them mounted in a single location. If a user gets a backup generator for the device, then the issue might not cause serious problems.

Still, this is definitely a disappointing limitation of the Qolsys IQ Remote Keypad. We hope that Qolsys will see this message and consider updating the IQ Remote to support an end-user replaceable battery. A well-constructed device can certainly be used for more than 10 years, but it needs a replaceable battery option so that it can truly go the maximum distance. Also, for anyone considering the IQ Remote for use with an IQ Panel 2 or IQ Panel 2 Plus, we still think it's a great keypad option, and we still recommend using it. Just be aware that after ten (10) years or so, the battery will probably stop holding a charge and will begin not working as intended. The keypad will need to be plugged in and receiving power at all times once this happens, or else it will power down immediately. Our hope is that Qolsys redesigns the IQ Remote Keypad to put an end to this issue. Then a user can buy a new battery once the original reaches its end-of-life, install the new one, and keep using this great keypad!

When AC power for the IQ Remote is lost (either due to the transformer being unplugged or an electrical outage), the backup battery will keep it running for several hours. But like any rechargeable battery, the one inside the Qolsys IQ Remote has a limited useful life. And once that useful life is up, the battery cannot be replaced with a new one. This means that the IQ Remote Keypad will need to be plugged in at all times in order to be used. If AC power becomes lost for any reason once this happens, then the IQ Remote will immediately power down. Also, the keypad will then always show a low-battery warning that can never be cleared. While not completely debilitating, it is an unfortunate aspect of the Qolsys IQ Remote device.

When we spoke with Qolsys about this issue, they assured us that the IQ Remote battery is "very long lasting", and a user shouldn't encounter this issue for at least ten (10) years from the initial manufacture date, assuming that the battery is cared for properly. Additionally, the company has stated that they have not received any excessive reports of IQ Remote battery failures since its release more than five (5) years ago. But it's fair to expect that Qolsys might be hearing about this issue more frequently in about five year's time when a large number of Qolsys IQ Remote batteries begin failing! At least most IQ Remote Keypads are not carried or transported around, and most users just leave them mounted in a single location. If a user gets a backup generator for the device, then the issue might not cause serious problems.

Still, this is definitely a disappointing limitation of the Qolsys IQ Remote Keypad. We hope that Qolsys will see this message and consider updating the IQ Remote to support an end-user replaceable battery. A well-constructed device can certainly be used for more than 10 years, but it needs a replaceable battery option so that it can truly go the maximum distance. Also, for anyone considering the IQ Remote for use with an IQ Panel 2 or IQ Panel 2 Plus, we still think it's a great keypad option, and we still recommend using it. Just be aware that after ten (10) years or so, the battery will probably stop holding a charge and will begin not working as intended. The keypad will need to be plugged in and receiving power at all times once this happens, or else it will power down immediately. Our hope is that Qolsys redesigns the IQ Remote Keypad to put an end to this issue. Then a user can buy a new battery once the original reaches its end-of-life, install the new one, and keep using this great keypad!

They used two (2) types of commercial grade Alarm.com Security Cameras, including the Alarm.com ADC-VC736 and the Alarm.com ADC-VC836. They even added the Alarm.com ADC-CSVR126 Commercial Streaming Video Recorder to facilitate a continuous 24-hour recording schedule. In addition to their IQ Panel 2 Plus and their IQ Remote Keypads, Bonka also set up a dedicated monitor that shows their camera feeds. They placed it up in a prominent spot where they can check it any time. We think this is a fantastic example of what kind of setup you can achieve with a security system and Alarm.com Cameras!

They love being able to control these devices locally from their alarm panel and keypads, and remotely from the Alarm.com platform on their phones and computers. It took them just a single afternoon to get everything ready and going, and they saved thousands of dollars by doing it themselves rather than hiring a professional installer.
