We have some good news from the folks planning ISC West 2020, as it appears they are right on-track for the all-virtual event scheduled for October 5th through 7th. Alarm Grid is eagerly awaiting the virtual event to get the latest happenings in the always exciting security industry.

According to ISC West organizers, the all-virtual event will include keynote speakers, education from SIA experts (Security Industry Association), vendor product training sessions and demonstrations, exhibitor tech center offerings, networking events for socialization, and more. It appears that the ISC West organizers are planning to do everything within their power to make this year's event memorable and worthwhile.

While we are disappointed that the in-person event in Las Vegas, NV ultimately had to be cancelled due to ongoing pandemic concerns, we understand that the health and safety of organizers, vendors, and attendees comes first. The Alarm Grid team will be embracing the all-virtual event, and we hope to get as much out of it as possible. This isn't just for us as security professionals. We also plan to keep security enthusiasts and DIYers informed about ongoing happenings in this constantly changing industry.

Mark the dates of Monday October 5th through Wednesday October 7th for virtual ISC West 2020 coverage! We are sure to have some exciting news to share. If you have any questions about ISC West 2020, or if you are interested in learning more about Alarm Grid monitoring service, send an email to our team at support@alarmgrid.com. We're here to check your incoming emails from 9am to 8pm ET M-F. We look forward to hearing from you!

The organizers of ISC West, along with the Security Industry Association (SIA), have announced that ISC West 2020 is again being postponed, this time to October 6th - 8th. It will still take place at the Sands Expo Center in Las Vegas, NV. This is the second postponement of the event.

Originally, ISC West 2020 had been scheduled for March 18th - 20th at the Sands Expo Center. However, the annual event was delayed on March 6th due to health concerns associated with the ongoing global Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. The new dates for the event were later announced as July 20th - 22nd.

Unfortunately, the organizers have determined that the July dates would no longer be suitable for this massive international event, which attracts thousands of security professionals from around the world every single year. The group has recently announced that the 2020 event will now be pushed back to October.

We are sure that this decision was not made lightly. This move had to have been made with the best interest of the health and safety of organizers, demonstrators, and attendees in mind. While our team at Alarm Grid is disappointed, we fully understand and respect the move of ISC West 2020 to October.

A statement from Reed Exhibitions Group Vice President Will Wise reads:

"Considering the escalation of COVID-19, travel and social distancing restrictions, and the economic impact over the past five weeks across the United States and the world, it is necessary to reschedule the event to October ... Working closely with the Sands Expo, we were committed to pursuing the best opportunity for ISC West to facilitate the conduct of business, education and peer-to-peer engaged platforms. Holding the event six months from now in October will offer the best scenario to support the security and public safety industry, in addition to the Las Vegas community. It is an unprecedented time, and we appreciate how the community is adapting, adjusting, and rallying."

The Reed Exhibitions group also released a document providing information regarding the waiving of airline fees. Most United States airline carriers are offering their customers refunds for travel plans that have been disrupted due to the ongoing pandemic. This is important for anyone who had already booked a flight to ISC West for the March or July dates. More information can be found here.

Although it is impossible for us to make any firm predictions (we don't have a magic crystal ball), it is fair to assume that this is the absolute furthest that ISC West 2020 can be pushed back. Any further, and you would begin to approach the time at which ISC West 2021 would likely be held. Holding the annual event back-to-back would not make any sense from a logistical or planning perspective. We may be stating the obvious here, but it looks like it's October or bust for ISC West 2020.

Right now, all we can do is hope that the world can move past the COVID-19 pandemic as quickly as possible so that we can save the date in October. Although October might seem like a long time from now, it will approach sooner than you think. Remember, ISC West is a huge global event that takes a tremendous amount of logistics and planning to be pulled off properly. Putting everything together during a major global crisis is simply impossible, and we applaud the organizers for make the change sooner rather than later.

Again, we would like to send our a sincere Thank You to the doctors, nurses, and scientists working on the front lines, as well as to all of the maintenance workers, sanitation workers, truck drivers, delivery drivers, and all of the other essential workers who are doing everything they can to help the rest of us during this difficult time. We are hopeful that this situation will be dealt with as quickly as possible so that order can once again be restored to the world.

Reed Exhibitions has announced new dates for the 2020 ISC West show in Las Vegas. The event will now be held July 20 - 22, 2020. The show will still take place in the Sands Exposition Center. Information about registration for the event will be sent out as soon as more details are available.

Alarm Grid plans to have a team on the show floor, bringing you news, including video and interviews from some of the top vendors on site. As the show dates draw nearer, we'll provide more information on what you can expect from our coverage. If you can't make it to the show and you have a burning question about upcoming products or services from your favorite security vendor, put them in the comments. We may ask your question on camera at the show!

In the meantime, please follow the recommended precautions to avoid the Coronavirus. According to the CDC you should take these precautionary measures to avoid becoming sick or making others sick:

Take Steps to Protect Yourself
  • Clean hands often: Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, in particular after you've been in a public place. Do so also after blowing your nose, coughing, or sneezing. If you can't wash your hands, use a hand sanitizer with at least a 60% alcohol content. Cover your hands completely, and rub them together until they feel dry.

  • Avoid contact: Avoid close contact with anyone who is sick. If COVID-19 is spreading in your area, keep your distance from other people. This is especially important for the very young, the elderly, and people with compromised immune systems.
Take Steps to Protect Others
  • Stay home: If you are sick, stay home. Contact your doctor or hospital and follow their instructions when seeking treatment.

  • Cover Coughs and Sneezes: Cover your mouth and nose when you sneeze. Use a tissue when available, if no tissue is available, use the inside of your elbow. Avoid using your hands, and if you must use your hands, be sure to wash thoroughly immediately afterward. See the note above for proper handwashing technique.

  • Wear a facemask: You should only wear a facemask if you are sick and you must come in contact with other people. If you can't wear a facemask, such as those people who have trouble breathing, do your best to cover your coughs and sneezes. Suggest that others around you wear a facemask. If you are not sick, you do not need to wear a facemask, unless you are caring for someone who is sick. Facemask supplies may be depleted, and should be reserved for those who are sick, or those who are caring for others who are sick.

  • Clean and Disinfect: Commonly touched surfaces should be disinfected daily. This includes tables, doorknobs, light switches, countertops, desks, phones, keyboards, toilets, faucets, sinks, car door handles, and steering wheels. Most EPA-registered household disinfectants will work. You can also make a bleach solution of 1/3 cup of bleach per 1 gallon of water, or 4 teaspoons bleach per quart of water. Check bleach to be sure it is not past the expiration date. Also, be sure to use bleach products in a well-ventilated area. New products that claim to be effective against viruses and that are EPA-registered are also expected to be effective against COVID-19. Be sure to follow the manufacturers recommended use instructions when using these products.

With 2019 now on its last days, we thought it would be a nice time to go back and look at what the security industry experienced this past year. As usual, we were there for it all, and we have so much to look back on. We hope that you enjoy this comprehensive year in review from Alarm Grid.

January 16 - Qolsys Releases the Qolsys IQ Hardwire 16-F

Qolsys made some big waves in January with their IQ Hardwire 16-F. This product is the first wired to wireless converter to support 2-wire smoke detectors. The module can also function as a wireless siren relay for a hardwired siren. The IQ Hardwire 16-F works with most 319.5 MHz wireless systems, including the Qolsys IQ Panel 2 Plus w/ Legacy Qolsys & Interlogix Daughtercard.

We were delighted in January when Gabe from Security Baron gave a comprehensive review of our Lyric AT&T LTE 3-1 Kit. This is a compete system kit that includes a brand-new Honeywell Lyric Controller, three (3) VERSA-2GIG Door/Window Contacts, a Honeywell SiXPIR Motion Sensor, a Honeywell LYRICLTE-A AT&T LTE Communicator and a Honeywell LT-Cable for providing power.

February 7 - Privacy When Disarmed for Total Connect 2.0

Total Connect 2.0 introduced a helpful new feature called "Privacy When Disarmed", which stops Total Connect IP Cameras from recording and capturing clips while a user's system is Disarmed. This feature is perfect for users who don't want to receive frequent notifications that occur from camera activity while they are on-site. Only Honeywell HD Cameras support this feature.

February 18 - Qolsys IQ Panel 2 Facial Recognition

Firmware Update 2.3.0 brought a major boost to the IQ Panel 2 and IQ Panel 2 Plus Systems, as users could now use the panel's built-in camera for disarm photos and facial recognition. The user can set up Alarm.com text and/or email notifications whenever an unrecognized face disarms the system. This feature is great for receiving alerts about possible suspicious system activity.

February 20 - MAC Prefix Update for Honeywell SiX Sensors

Honeywell SiX Series Sensors for the Honeywell Lyric Controller received an updated MAC prefix. This meant that they were only compatible with the system's latest firmware version. This is another reason why it's important to always keep your system running on the latest firmware. For more information on the latest Lyric Firmware, please check here. Please also review how to update the firmware.

March 20 - Lyric Firmware Update MR8

Resideo released Firmware Update MR8 for the Lyric System. The update brought a few changes to the system. The WIFI indicator in the panel's upper-left corner will now show a red X if IP connectivity goes down. SiX Series Sensors now have a shorter RF transmission supervision interval. And the SiX Programming Menu now shows every enrolled SiX Sensor for easy access.

March 21 - Verified Response Repealed in San Jose, CA

The city of San Jose, CA repealed its verified response policy. This makes it easier for a central station operator to send out authorities during an emergency event. This was a big win for Alarm Grid monitored customers who receive central station monitoring service from Criticom. We hope that more cities will follow the lead set by San Jose in repealing verified response laws moving forward.

March 27 - Honeywell LYNXTOUCH-MSD Updater Tool

Resideo released the Honeywell LYNXTOUCH-MSD Updater Tool, which is used for updating the firmware version of a Honeywell LYNX Touch Panel. At first, the updater tool was only compatible with the Honeywell L5210 and Honeywell L7000. However, it was later reworked to support the Honeywell L5200 as well. Honeywell L5200 panels updated using the tool will be seen by AlarmNet360 as L5210 panels moving forward. Updating to the latest firmware can be important for using an LTE radio.

March 28 - No Activity Alerts from TC2

Total Connect 2.0 made it easier to monitor your loved one with their new "No Activity Alerts". This feature allows users to receive text and/or email notifications whenever no system activity occurs within a set period of time. The feature can be very useful for monitoring a loved one who may have trouble getting around. If you receive a "No Activity Alert", then you know to check on them.

April 1 - Alarm Grid SiXTH Sensor

Our April Fool's Day joke was a big hit, as we announced our very own SiXTH Sensor for the Honeywell Lyric Security Panel. This sensor uses a Device Type of "Paranormal Detector" and a special Response Type of "Bruce Willis". It will alert the security system as soon as it detects any otherworldly paranormal activity. Begone other-dimensional spirits!

April 9 - Honeywell LTE-IV Available

This was a big day for Honeywell VISTA System users, as the Honeywell LTE-IV became the first-ever dual-path LTE & IP communicator available for these panels. The Honeywell LTE-IV provides connectivity with AlarmNet360 through both the Verizon LTE Network and through a wired ethernet connection. A Honeywell LTE-IA with service from the AT&T LTE Network & IP was later released.

April 12 - Interview w/ Jeremy McLerran of Qolsys

Another big moment during our ISC West 2019 experience was interviewing Qolsys Director of Marketing Jeremy McLerran to pick his brain about the Qolsys IQ Panel 2 Plus System. The Qolsys IQ Panel 2 Plus is still our top security system as of the end of 2019. Being able to check out the Qolsys booth and the rest of ISC West was a great experience, and you can expect more in 2020.

April 25 - Alarm Grid Mini Window Stickers

Our mini window stickers quickly became a fan favorite! We have had larger window stickers available for quite some time. But we got many requests for smaller window stickers that are easier to place. And now we have mini window stickers. You can get adhesive-backed mini stickers in single, 5-packs, and 10-packs. Adhesive-front stickers also come in single, 5-packs, and 10-packs.

May 15 - Tennessee Ends False Alarm Fines for Monitoring Companies

Tennessee Governor William "Bill" Lee signed a law that stops local governments from fining alarm companies for any false alarms that occur. Additional, local Tennessee governments can no longer charge monitoring companies for alarm permits. Only end users can be charged for excessive false alarms and for alarm permits. This makes it easier for monitoring companies to provide service.

May 21 - Total Connect 2.0 Update 2.12.4

Resideo updated Total Connect 2.0 to version 2.12.4. This update made it possible to see the current status for smart home devices across multiple locations. Users who use Total Connect 2.0 across multiple residences and/or businesses really appreciated this update, which made it easier to quickly check the status for their programmed home automation accessories.

June 18 - Lyric Firmware Update MR9

Lyric Firmware Update MR9 is still the system's latest firmware version as of the end of 2019. This firmware version made it possible for the Lyric System to support the Honeywell LYRICLTE-V Verizon LTE Communicator, which was released later in 2019. End users can check out the release notes for MR9 if they want to learn more about the latest firmware for the Lyric Alarm Panel.

June 26 - End of 3G Activations

The security industry made great strides in 2019 in helping end users make the transition to LTE communicators. AlarmNet began stopping 3G communicator activations on Wednesday June 26, 2019. Alarm.com followed suit and stopped allowing 3G activations after Sunday June 30, 2019. Users looking to get started with cellular monitoring should make sure to get an LTE communicator.

Hi DIYers! Today, we're taking a quick look at the upcoming Wireless VERSA Multi-Protocol Motion Sensor. We got the first look at this device at ISC West 2019, and we think it will make for a great addition to nearly any home or business alarm system that needs reliable motion detection.

As you may know, VERSA already offers a door and window contact that uses the same hardware as the Honeywell 5800MINI. The VERSA Contact is currently available in a 2GIG 345 MHz Variant and a Qolsys/Interlogix/GE 319.5 MHz Variant. Well their multi-protocol motion sensor is a complete game-changer, as its wireless frequency can be adjusted to work with the end user's security system.

The Wireless VERSA Multi-Protocol Motion Sensor will feature an adjustable knob that can be used to set the sensor to work with Honeywell, 2GIG, Qolsys, Interlogix/GE, Bosch and DSC Systems. This technology is revolutionary, and it should make things very easy for DIY users in knowing that the sensor will work properly.

Like most motion sensors, the new VERSA motion will use PIR technology to detect movement. It will also offer high and low sensitivity options. The low sensitivity setting will be used in most applications, and it will support pet-immunity. The high sensitivity option will be suitable for applications that require a higher level of security.

VERSA expects that the new motion will be available sometime in the next couple of months. Additionally, we also received word from VERSA that a multi-protocol wireless door and window contact is also in the works. You will soon be able to outfit nearly any wireless system with VERSA contacts and motions!

We encourage you to view the following video for more information about the upcoming motion:

Hi DIYers. We made sure to check out the Alarm.com booth at ISC West 2019. The announcements we were most excited about were the SONOS integration with the Alarm.com app and the upcoming ADC T3000 Thermostat. Both will fit in very nicely with the smart home platform offered from Alarm.com.

Alarm.com users will soon be able to integrate their SONOS Speakers with their programmed Alarm.com smart scenes. Users will have the ability to select which audio playlist will play when the scene is triggered. This feature will be great for users who want to put a specific playlist into action when they disarm their system to trigger a scene. The Alarm.com Mobile App will also allow users to play and pause the playlist and adjust the volume as needed. Users with multiple SONOS Speakers can even choose which device(s) will play audio. And with the SIRI shortcuts feature for scene control, it will also be possible to activate a SONOS Speaker using spoken voice commands.

The ADC T3000 Thermostat will essentially replace the ADC T2000 Thermostat. This upcoming Z-Wave thermostat will utilize Z-Wave Plus technology for enhanced signal range. The back of the device offers more space for wiring, and the improved terminals allow installers to make connections more easily. A built-in level helps ensure that the end result is neat and tidy. The UI is very simple, but it also appears modern and sleek. It should fit in very nicely with almost any existing decor. Alarm.com also helped make the device easier to understand, as the words "Heat" and "Cool" are actively displayed based on the current action. Many programming options and settings are available, and the device integrates beautifully with the Alarm.com App.

Hi DIYers! We're keeping the ISC West 2019 content rolling by giving a brief overview of Danalock's presence in the Z-Wave Alliance booth. As you know, Alarm Grid loves all things related to smart home automation, and we believe that Danalock can make a great addition to nearly any home.

The third generation Danalock V3 can be split into two main versions. These are the Danalock V3 Z-Wave and the Danalock V3 HomeKit. Both options provide superb protection and are easily powered using four CR123A lithium batteries. They also offer 256-bit AES encryption for top-of-the-line wireless security. And of course, users will appreciate the sleek and modern design.

The HomeKit version is perfect for iOS users looking for a quick and convenient way to lock and unlock their home using the iPhone or iPad. Unlike the Z-Wave model, the HomeKit version of the Danalock is mostly a standalone device that does not pair with other Danalock accessories. Still, iOS users who want a simple, yet effective smart lock will certainly be impressed.

However, the Z-Wave version of the Danalock is where the device really shines. The lock is certified Z-Wave Plus, giving it an extended range and enhanced battery life when compared with classic Z-Wave devices. The Danalock Z-Wave will pair with nearly any Z-Wave controller and allow users to operate it remotely through an interactive platform like Total Connect 2.0 or Alarm.com.

The Danalock V3 Z-Wave is also known for supporting key accessories and add-ons that serve to enhance its capabilities. The Danabridge V3 Hub lets the user connect their Z-Wave Danalock with a local WIFI network. This way, they can control the device using the Danalock App on their Android or iOS device. This app will also keep track of when the lock is used and which codes are used to control the lock.

Another accessory supported by the Danalock V3 Z-Wave is the Danapad V3, which is essentially an external, push-button keypad for Danalock devices. Codes are pushed to the Danapad either through the Danalock App (Danabridge V3 required) or through the user's Z-Wave hub. The device can store up to 20 user codes, and it measure 3.2 inches in diameter and 1.4 inches thick. It is powered using four AAA batteries. Please note that the HomeKit version of Danalock will NOT support the Danapad.

Finally, we also took a brief moment to check out some of the Z-Wave light switches and other devices featured in the Z-Wave Alliance booth. It's amazing to see how Z-Wave Plus technology has really taken off and continues to evolve. We hope to be making more Z-Wave smart home devices available on our website in the near future!
