Qolsys IQ Panel 2 Plus Verizon LTE, Interlogix/GE Compatible Posts

Firmware Version 2.5.0 for the Qolsys IQ Panel 2 Plus is now officially available and can be downloaded to any original IQ Panel 2 or IQ Panel 2 Plus. The update provides some new and exciting capabilities for the system. It is advised that anyone with a compatible IQ2 System updates ASAP.

Before we talk about the new features that come with Software Version 2.5.0, let's first discuss how to update the software on the panel. The IQ Panel 2 or IQ Panel 2 Plus System must be already running at least Firmware Version 2.0.1. The panel must be connected to a local WIFI network. Its transformer should be plugged in, and its backup battery should be charged. Once those conditions are met, you can begin the upgrading process.

Start from the main screen of the system. Click the small grey bar at the top of the screen. Select Settings > Advanced Settings > enter the Installer Code (default is 1111) > Upgrade Software > Patch Tag > enter iqpanel2.5.0 > OK > Upgrade Using Network. If done correctly, the upgrading process should begin. The process will take around (15) minutes. Please note that you must enter iqpanel2.5.0 exactly as the Patch Tag. If you enter the Patch Tag differently, then the process will not work correctly. If you do not have access to a WIFI connection, the firmware update files can be downloaded from our site.

As for the 2.5.0 Firmware itself, the following new features and changes have been made:

• New Sensor Group 25 - Non Reporting. Used with Environmental Sensors (Flood, Freeze, Temperature). Will not report to central station, but will report to Alarm.com Fixes previous issue of temperature sensors being unable to send notifications to users through Alarm.com.
• New Sensor Group 53 - Temperature Reporting. Used with Temperature Sensors for reporting to a central station.
• Added support for sump pump integration through Alarm.com if Water Management Add-On Package is applied to the account.
• Can now delete failed Z-Wave nodes from Alarm.com.
• Added software and settings that support European CE & EN Grade 2 Certification.
• New Languages: Dutch, Italian, Icelandic, Norwegian, Swedish.
• Sensor name length limit increased from 24 characters to 56 characters.
• Can now set Photo Frame Start Time to begin after One (1) Minute of inactivity.
• Panel overheat notification can now be sent to Alarm.com.
• New quick names for motion detection sensors available.
• Disabling the Panel Camera Setting now also disables Panel Camera from the Equipment List and from the Alarm.com back-end and mobile app.
• Master Code can now make language changes.
• Minor translation updates for Spanish and French (Canadian).

Alarm.com users have a lot to look forward to in the coming days. The security and automation platform is expected to soon release updated versions of its Android and iOS mobile apps. Additionally, updated weather text messaging features are now available for the Qolsys IQ Panel 2.

Whether you use the Alarm.com Android App or the Alarm.com iOS App, you should expect to upgrade to a new version in the coming days. The new Alarm.com Android App version is 4.10.16, while the new Alarm.com iOS App version is 4.11.1. Once available, the Android version can be downloaded for free from the Google Play Store, and the iOS version can be downloaded for free from the Apple App Store. You likely have a section on your phone where you can update your existing app, or your phone may perform the update automatically if enabled.

There aren't many major changes coming to the Alarm.com Mobile App with this update. However, it is still strongly recommended that you download the latest version, as some stability and performance issues have been addressed. Additionally, the new app versions feature a brand-new dashboard card and screen for shade automation control. This is great news for Alarm.com users who use Z-Wave shade controllers, such as the Somfy ZDMI or Somfy ZRSTi, which are both compatible with certain Somfy curtain motors. In previous app versions, curtain motors were controlled from the same card and screen used for smart lighting.

In other news, Qolsys IQ Panel 2 users can now receive updated weather-related text message alerts from Alarm.com. This update provides improved clarity for existing weather descriptions to ensure that end users can better understand their local weather forecasts. Weather texts are sent in English, though improved translations for Spanish and French are also available from Alarm.com.

The Alarm.com IQ Panel 2 weather text alerts are available for any Qolsys IQ Panel 2 or IQ Panel 2 Plus System running Firmware Version 2.4.0 or higher. The system must be connected with Alarm.com, and the Weather to Panel Service Package Add-On must be applied to your account. If you do not have this feature applied, talk to your alarm monitoring provider about having the feature added to your account. Alarm Grid customers can have this feature applied at no additional charge to their existing monthly monitoring fee.

If you don't have access to Alarm.com, then now is a great time to get started. You will first need a security system with a compatible Alarm.com Cellular Communicator. Most of these best security systems lists are frustrating to navigate. Many of them include companies and their respective rating. ADT, Brinks, Vivint, or others will make the cut. We’re sad to never be included in these lists. But that reflects the state of the industry. Many people don’t know that other alarm monitoring companies exist. Still others only include the new DIY systems that are on the market like Simplisafe, Ring, Nest, or Scout. Consumer Reports, for example, only reviews Nest, Ring, Abode, Frontpoint, Simplisafe, and Samsung’s Smarthings integrated GC3 that they produced for ADT. This list is, in no way, a complete list of products. Moreover, it completely ignores legacy and current systems. And, while we like “new,” being in the industry, we are proud to say that the so-called “professional” systems that are out there are better than these systems for a few simple reasons.

Our list includes exclusively professional equipment. It is the same equipment that ADT or other installation companies might sell you. We’ve tested a lot of these DIY systems. They work well to varying degrees. But we have found that nothing surpasses the quality or features of a professional system. What’s more, we provide the help that you need to turn these professionally installed systems into the DIY systems that you may be looking for.

Yup! You heard that right. You don’t need a professional to install a professional home security system.

They are simple enough to install and operate that you can do it yourself. Additionally, you can have them monitored by anyone. We think that this feature is the feature that sets them apart from any of the new “DIY” systems. Simplisafe systems must be monitored by Simplisafe. Ring systems must be monitored by Amazon. Nest systems must be monitored by Google’s chosen provider: Monitronics (now Brinks).

But a professional system can be monitored by any alarm company. We certainly do monitor them. But if you’re interested in having a local installer at your beck and call, you can have Larry the alarm installer from down the road monitor it as well.

In all, these systems are not easy to rank. Each one comes with its own set of features and benefits. So we have organized the following list based on your own possible set of needs.

So without further ado, here are the 3 best alarm systems of 2020.

Best Interactive Service of 2020

Alarm.com

Interactive services are the apps that allow you to control your alarm system from your phone or computer. There are dozens of such services. Some companies, such as the ones we mentioned above have their own proprietary service. But then, there are a few universal services. These are sold by Interlogix, DSC, Alarmnet (Honeywell), Securenet and others. Our favorite of these interactive services is alarm.com. It is a great service that works with Qolsys products, DSC products, Interlogix products, 2GIG products, and more. Unfortunately, it does not work with most Honeywell products.

It provides a wide array of controls, including the ability to use SIRI to command your system and schedule Z-Wave scenes. The drawback is that Alarm.com requires users to sign up for cellular monitoring. This is the best, most robust kind of monitoring. But some users don’t want that level of connectivity. Some end users are satisfied with just IP monitoring. In the 90s, particularly, phone line monitoring was the norm. Modern monitoring has found other, better, more secure options. No one can cut the line of a cellular device, for example. IP monitoring suffers from many of the same problems as phone line monitoring. But it also allows users to get many of the advantages of cellular monitoring, including homeowner’s insurance discounts. Even still, despite this drawback of alarm.com, it is our preferred interactive service.

That said, its closest competition is Honeywell’s Total Connect. Total Connect only works with Honeywell. It does almost everything that Alarm.com does, with a few specific differences - no native SIRI control, for example. That said, Honeywell makes excellent equipment. The Lyric alarm, for example, works with HomeKit. This integration will allow individual control of the unit from SIRI. This is actually more robust than even alarm.com’s SIRI integration. And the only options that a HomeKit user has on the Alarm.com side is the DSC iotega, which is a system that works, but for many reasons, doesn’t make this list.

Ultimately, whether you use Alarm.com or Total Connect, it will depend on your system’s interactive service compatibility. If you are interested in system features, look at the systems below. If you are more concerned with the usability of the interactive service, you can certainly pick a system based on its qualities and compatibility with an interactive service.

Best Overall System of 2020

Qolsys IQ Panel 2+

This security system is an amazing piece of equipment. It is a great looking home automation controller as well as a security system. It’s Alarm.com compatibility is a great feature that makes the Qolsys IQ Panel 2+ a stratospherically better panel than almost anything on the market. The system is built on the Android operating system. Ultimately, the Qolsys is what you get when you beset a Silicon Valley company with the task of building a professional alarm system. It is feature filled, beautifully and competently built.

One of the frustrations with the Qolsys is its lack of modularity. It is an expensive system. Everything is built in to the panel. Whereas most security systems allow a user to install (and uninstall) a cellular communicator, the Qolsys builds the communicator right into the panel itself. This sounds like a great feature, and it is. But that’s until the system’s communicator becomes obsolete. It’s something that doesn’t happen very often, but every 10 or so years, the cellular companies deprecate one or more of their networks. At this very moment, Alarm Grid’s subscribers are preparing to replace thousands of communicators. As Verizon and AT&T deprecate their old CDMA and 3G networks, the systems that have included these communicators are coming due for an upgrade. The drawback of the Qolsys is that there is no upgrade per se. Rather, end users with an older Qolsys will have to replace the entire panel.

Despite this drawback, the Qolsys is a great unit. One of its best features is its ability to take over old systems. For those that are looking to replace an old system, the Qolsys is a great choice. The new Qolsys IQ Panel 2 Plus’s come in different varieties, each with a daughter card that allows them to grab the signals from other company’s wireless sensors.

Just awesome!

In our opinion the best feature of the new Qolsys IQ Panel 2 Plus, however, is not its amazing home automation features or its ability to take over other systems. It’s not even its slick Android interface. All those features can and are replicated by its competitors. Rather, our favorite feature of the Qolsys is its sensor’s ranges. The Qolsys is a panel whose PowerG sensors, which are encrypted, are capable of being monitored over HUGE ranges. We have seen the Qolsys detect sensors that are nearly a half mile away. This makes the PowerG line of sensors that are compatible with the Qolsys an amazing feature that no other all-in-one system has. These sensors basically remove the need for expensive repeaters. They are modern sensors that no other company has.

Eat your heart out Google, Amazon, and all ya’ll Silicon Valley companies trying to build better systems. None of these systems even touch the quality of the Qolsys in our opinion.

Best HomeKit Compatible System of 2020

Honeywell Lyric

The Lyric is in competition with DSC’s Iotega, which works as a HomeKit controller. If you’re looking for HomeKit control, and your home is filled with DSC sensors, the Iotega might be a better choice for you. But if you’re starting from scratch, nothing is better than the Lyric controller. This system is compatible with a wide range of sensors, including America’s most sold sensor, the 5816. It looks great on a wall. It’s fairly priced, and it does everything you’d want from a good looking system, including a photo album feature.

We sold more Lyric’s in 2019 than any other system on the market. This is largely due to Honeywell’s trusted name. The quality exemplified by the brand is epitomized in this sleek wall unit. Its versatility is buttressed by the hundreds of compatible sensors that Honeywell has released over the years.

We like Honeywell’s no-nonsense approach to monitoring. They put security over all. They were the first mainstream system on the market with both a panel and encrypted sensors. And the sensors work immensely well. We love Honeywell. We love the Lyric. At the moment, we believe that the Qolsys has surpassed the features of Honeywell’s alarm system. But the Lyric has one feature that Qolsys simply does not: the ability to be monitored by WiFi only. In fact, nearly all of Honeywell’s all-in-one systems can be monitored by WiFi only. For an end user, this means that they can be professionally monitored at a price that is significantly cheaper than that of a cellular system. For the budget conscience consumer, this presents an amazing opportunity to save money while getting all the benefits of a monitored system, including insurance discounts. We are a big fan of cellular monitoring. But the option is there for those who simply don’t think it’s as important as we do or for those who don’t want to pay the cost of cellular monitoring.

Runner Up: DSC iotega

Best Budget Alarm System

Honeywell L3000

We spent a lot of time debating whether the L3000 would be the best system for someone on a budget. We actually prefer the GC2e as a system. It’s a great looking system, it’s inexpensive, and it uses Alarm.com. But here’s the problem: it requires that anyone using it purchase a cellular communicator. Additionally, because its most minimal monitoring will include Alarm.com. This puts anyone purchasing it into a different category of spending. That said, if it’s not outside of your budget, the GC2e is a great system. It is our runner-up, because it is a good budget system, but it’s not great.

The low price of the L3000 is no indication of its quality. It is because it is a legacy system. It is often used by alarm companies that are putting systems into big apartment buildings. The system is amazing. It’s effective, will last for a very long time. Unfortunately, it’s ugly and can be a bear to program. Luckily for owners, programming is not something you do more than one time. And if you’re with Alarm Grid, there is a strong chance that we can program it for you.

Unlike the GC2e, the L3000 allows users to do IP-only monitoring. It also allows old-school phone line monitoring. That means, for the budget-conscious consumer, the L3000 is both cheaper to purchase than the GC2e, and will save an end user between $10 and $20 per month. In all, the L3000 will save anyone who installs it between $120 and $240 per year, while also being incredibly affordable at the outset. Huzzah! Oh, and for those concerned about sensors, the L3000 works great with any of the Honeywell’s 5800 sensors. You will have a ton of sensors to pick from, which also makes the system the most versatile budget system on the market.

We love the L3000 as a budget system.

Best Wired Alarm System of 2020

Honeywell VISTA 20P

This is an oldie but a goodie. The VISTA 20P has been produced by Honeywell for many many years now. It's an excellent system with great, modern features. Honeywell produces update chips that they release every once in a while. These updates allow the system to take advantage of modern features like those available in the VAM or Tuxedo Touch. Home Automation? You can do it using the VISTA 20P. Manage both wired and wireless sensors? You can do that very easily with the VISTA 20P by adding a wireless receiver or a keypad with a wireless receiver built in. In all, this system has all the same great features of its all-in-one wireless contemporaries. 2 drawbacks to speak of, though: 1) it's big and bulky; 2) programming these systems sucks.

Runner-up: Honeywell VISTA 21iP

What Else is Coming in 2020?

Every year, professional systems get better and better. The systems that are coming soon are no different. In the coming months, we are expecting the release of Qolsys’s new Hub as well as Honeywell’s ProSeries panel. 2GIG hasn’t announced anything yet. But they just released the encrypted versions of their panels.

Unfortunately, 2019 saw the close of Interlogix’s security systems production division. While interlogix was not known for the incredible innovation of their systems, they made great budget models that gave users a simple, cheap entry point into security systems. They will be missed. But the three main producers--2GIG, Qolsys, and Resideo (formerly Honeywell)--are continuing to pioneer new and innovative features.

It's less than two weeks until Christmas, and time is running out to get presents! If you're looking for a new alarm system, then you might strongly consider the Qolsys IQ Panel 2 Plus. This guide will help whether you are looking at a new IQ Panel 2 Plus or adding upon an existing system.

The Qolsys IQ Panel 2 Plus is undoubtedly one of the top security systems available as of now. In fact, we recently rated it as our top security system of 2019. The IQ Panel 2 Plus is the masterpiece creation of Qolsys, a company that will celebrate their 10th year anniversary in 2020. Despite being relatively new to the game, the company still managed to put out a beautiful, state-of-the-art alarm panel that is perfect for everyone from DIYers to large businesses.

The laundry list of features offered from the Qolsys IQ Panel 2 Plus is mind-boggling. This sleek and modern security panel offers 128 wireless zones, integrated WIFI, a built-in LTE cellular communicator (AT&T or Verizon), an integrated Z-Wave Plus controller, automatic Bluetooth disarming, a built-in 5 MP camera for automatic disarm photos when enabled, partitioning support for up to four (4) partitions, live-streaming for compatible Alarm.com Cameras, an integrated glass break sensor, touchscreen controls, one-touch panic buttons, and so much more.

Building a Qolsys IQ Panel 2 Plus from Scratch

If you are considering a new Qolsys IQ Panel 2 Plus System, then the one big thing you will want to keep in mind is that there are three (3) different versions of the system. This refers to which legacy daughtercard is installed inside the panel. The legacy daughtercard determines which wireless frequency is supported by the system for using wireless sensors. Each of these three legacy frequencies supports a large wireless sensor lineup. If you are just starting out, then you can consider them equal on all counts. We recommend going with the 319.5 MHz version for the sole reason that it is the least expensive. The only real reason to choose the 345 MHz version or the 433 MHz version is if you have existing wireless sensors that you are hoping to use with the IQ2.

One other important thing to note is that you are not restricted to only using the legacy frequency of wireless sensors with your system. Every version of the Qolsys IQ Panel 2 Plus can also support wireless PowerG Sensors. This is true whether you are using the 319.5 MHz version, the 345 MHz version, or the 433 MHz version. PowerG Sensors are known for their incredible wireless range and extremely secure communication. The sensors can communicate from up to 2,000 feet away from the IQ Panel 2 Plus when used with a direct line of sight. Every signal is sent using military grade 128-bit AES encryption for maximum security. We believe that the PowerG Sensors are the best security sensors for the Qolsys IQ Panel 2 Plus, even with the legacy frequency support.

Once you have determined whether you want the 319.5 MHz version, the 345 MHz version, or the 433 MHz version, you must also determine which cellular service provider you will use with the system. Every version of the Qolsys IQ Panel 2 Plus includes a built-in cellular communicator. You can choose between AT&T LTE and Verizon LTE service. We recommend going with whichever service works best in your area. Please note that any monitoring expenses will be the same whether you use the AT&T version or the Verizon version. This is because cellular service expenses are covered by your alarm monitoring company as part of your alarm monitoring plan. Because of requirements mandated by Alarm.com you must activate the cellular communicator inside your Qolsys IQ Panel 2 Plus System for monitoring service. This means that you will need an alarm monitoring plan that includes cellular service, such as an Alarm Grid Gold Plan. When buying a new Qolsys IQ Panel 2 Plus System, it is recommended that you get one of the pre-configured system kits from Alarm Grid. These kits include everything you need to get started with a new Qolsys IQ Panel 2 Plus. Assuming you go with the 319.5 MHz version (the least expensive), you can choose from a total of eight (8) kits. You will need to decide whether you want a system with AT&T LTE or Verizon LTE, and you will need to decide whether you want the kit to include encrypted PowerG Sensors or non-encrypted 319.5 MHz sensors. You must also choose whether you want a 3-1 kit or a 10-1 kit. A 3-1 kit will have three (3) door/window contacts and one (1) motion sensor, while a 10-1 kit will have ten (10) door/window contacts and one (1) motion sensor.

Sensors for New and Existing IQ Panel 2 Plus Systems

When shopping for sensors for an IQ Panel 2 Plus, you must consider two factors. The first is which version of the system is it (319.5 MHz, 345 MHz, and 433 MHz). The second is whether or not the system is an actual IQ Panel 2 Plus, or if it is an original IQ Panel 2 System. By answering that first question, you can determine which type of legacy sensor frequency you can use with the system. Of course, this is a non-issue if you are using exclusively PowerG Sensors.

Having to consider whether or not an IQ Panel 2 Plus System is actually an IQ Panel 2 Plus might seem silly at first. But the thing is that the IQ Panel 2 Plus looks exactly the same as an original IQ Panel 2 System. If you are buying sensors for someone else, then you might not know whether or not the system is a Plus model or an original Non-Plus model. This is important to determine, as only the IQ Panel 2 Plus can support PowerG Sensors. There is no way to use PowerG Sensors with an original IQ Panel 2 System. If you are wanting to surprise a friend or family member with some new sensors, then it may be important to ask whether the system they are using is a Qolsys IQ Panel 2 Plus or an original Qolsys IQ Panel 2. If the system is an original Non-Plus IQ Panel 2, then the only sensors it can support are the 319.5 MHz sensors from Qolsys and Interlogix. This includes the Qolsys S-Line Sensors, which use rolling code encryption.

Remember, PowerG Sensors will offer the best range and the strongest wireless security. Accessories for Your Qolsys IQ Panel 2 Plus

Now that we have covered sensors you might use with your Qolsys IQ Panel 2 Plus System, you might also want to look into some accessories. Alarm.com Security Cameras are an excellent option if you are willing to get an alarm monitoring plan that includes video surveillance, such as an Alarm Grid Platinum Level Plan. The Qolsys is unique in that it can actually live-stream certain Alarm.com Security Cameras right from the panel itself. You will also be able to view the live feed for these camera from pretty much anywhere using the Alarm.com Mobile App on an Android or iOS device. There are a bunch of Alarm.com Cameras to choose from, but right now we really like the Alarm.com ADC-V523 for indoor use, and the Alarm.com ADC-V723 for outdoor use.

You will also likely want to take advantage of the system's built-in Z-Wave Plus controller. This will allow you to use a variety of Z-Wave Plus devices, including smart lights, door locks, and thermostats. You can also use classic Z-Wave devices with the system, but you should use Z-Wave Plus devices to maximize the range and battery life. And keep in mind that you can create special smart scenes using Alarm.com to have your Z-Wave devices activate automatically based on a schedule or with certain system events. We are also sure that many IQ Panel 2 Plus users will want to set their system up for garage door control. Luckily, there is a great Z-Wave device for the job. The Linear GD00Z speaks Z-Wave, and it can easily enroll with your Qolsys IQ Panel 2 Plus System. The module also comes with its own tilt sensor for identifying when the garage door is opened or closed. And as a Z-Wave device, you will be able to include it into your smart scenes as well!

There are other miscellaneous accessories you might also want to use with the Qolsys IQ Panel 2 Plus. If you want an external keypad, then the Qolsys IQ Remote is far and away the best option. This is a powerful touchscreen keypad that can do pretty much everything that the panel itself is capable of accomplishing. This is fantastic if you want to have an additional designated location for controlling your system in your home or business. The remote conveniently pairs across WIFI or an Access Point (AP), making it super easy to complete the integration. It even features a built-in camera for disarm photos, just like the main panel!

We also want to mention that while the IQ Panel 2 does come included with a desk stand for resting the system on a desk or table, you also have the option of getting the sturdier Qolsys IQ Stand, which will certainly keep your system upright. This is perfect if you have no intention of mounting your panel to the wall.

Hi DIYers! This is Part 2 of our Qolsys IQ Panel 2 Plus Install Guide. Today, we will be focusing on a variety of topics, mostly arming the system, bypassing sensors, adjusting arming settings, Bluetooth disarming, adjusting user codes, the system messaging center, and panic buttons.

If you want to start from the beginning, you can find Part 1 of this series right here.

This install guide of ours is designed to follow the manual for the system. If you want to follow along with the manual for the system, then it is available here. Just keep in mind that the order in which we present information may be different from the manual. The processes shown here fully apply whether you are using an original Qolsys IQ Panel 2, or a newer Qolsys IQ Panel 2 Plus System. Today, we will have two (2) videos to accompany this content. With that out of the way, let's begin!

Our Part 4 video focuses primarily on Arming/Disarming the Qolsys IQ Panel 2. When you arm your system, you are putting it into a secure state. Many Sensor Groups for the Qolsys IQ Panel 2 are only active when the system is in an armed state. We recommend reviewing the Sensor Groups so that you know how different sensors will respond when the system is activated.

To keep things simple, you will generally use Arm Away when all occupants plan to be away from the premises. When the system is in this state, there should be nobody inside the building, and nobody should be around to activate Interior Sensors. If someone will still be inside the building, but you want to put the perimeter protection points into a secure state, then you can put the system into Arm Stay mode. This way, the system will not go into alarm if Interior Sensors are activated. However, the system will still respond to Perimeter Zones and Entry/Exit Zones.

You will also likely want to adjust the various arming settings for your Qolsys IQ Panel 2 System. There is an entire menu in system settings for this purpose. You may also want to adjust your Entry Delays and Exit Delays. In the simplest terms, Entry Delay is how long you have to disarm the system after activating an Entry/Exit Zone before an alarm will occur. Exit Delay is how long you have to vacate the premises when Arming Away before the arming setting will go into effect. Once the Arm Away setting has gone into effect, then activating an Entry/Exit Zone will trigger the Entry Delay countdown, and you will need to disarm within that time period. It is also important to understand that there are both Normal Entry/Exit Delays and Long Entry/Exit Delays. The Long Entry/Exit Delays are important to adjust if you are using any zones with Sensor Group 12 - Entry/Exit - Long Delay. Use this zone type for a door that you may sometimes use to enter or exit but that is further from the system, and so requires a longer delay period. If you do not have any zones like this, then the Long Entry/Exit Delays are irrelevant.

One convenient feature for the Qolsys IQ Panel 2 is automatic Bluetooth disarming. If enabled, this will have the system automatically disarm when you bring your phone within Bluetooth range of the system. The way that this works is that the system expects you to bring your phone with you when you arm the system and leave for the day. When you return later on, you will bring your phone back with you. The system will automatically receive the Bluetooth signal from your phone, and it will disarm without you needing to enter a code. Remember, this feature only works if you enable it. This will require you to program your phone with the Qolsys IQ Panel 2 System as a Bluetooth device. You will also want to make sure you adjust the Bluetooth settings for the panel accordingly.

Our Part 5 video covers some miscellaneous tips for the Qolsys IQ Panel 2 System. Specifically, we cover system codes, the messaging center, and system panic buttons. Setting up user codes is something you will likely do if someone new is now using the panel, and they need their own code. Likewise, you may want to delete a code if someone is no longer permitted to use your system. At the very least, you should change the system Master Code (also called Admin) away from its default of 1234. Keeping this code at 1234 is a major security risk!

The messaging center for the Qolsys IQ Panel 2 is a great way to see if any events occurred on your system while you were away. These events can include things like someone making an incorrect code entry, a system trouble that occurred, an alarm on the system, and so much more. You can conveniently access this section right from the main screen of your IQ Panel 2. If you see that your messaging center has a notification, then you should check it as soon as you can so that you can see what occurred on your system. Once you "acknowledge" the notifications, the messages will clear.

Lastly, there is a section of the main screen of the IQ Panel 2 where you can trigger emergency panics. These include Police Panics, Fire Alarms, and Auxiliary Medical Panics. Additionally, you can activate Police and Medical Panics as "silent" so that no audible siren occurs when the alarm is triggered. Keep in mind that these panics are really only useful if you have your IQ Panel 2 monitored with central station monitoring service. The central station will receive the incoming alert and know to take action immediately. If you only have self-monitoring service, then a notification for the alarm will still be sent to you via text and/or email notification. But if you already knowingly triggered one of the system panic buttons, then that isn't very useful. However, for users with central station service, these panic buttons can be a quick and easy way to get help during an emergency.

And for apartments, there is an excellent table stand you can buy for the system!

4. 2GIG GC2e

The 2GIG GC2e is the current entry-level option from 2GIG. It packs some great features into a small package, and it provides some nice upgrades over its 2GIG GC2 predecessor. With the GC2e, you will enjoy a larger 5-inch touchscreen, built-in Z-Wave Plus, and support for 2GIG eSeries Encrypted Sensors. Some other specs include support for up to 60 wireless zones and 64 different user codes. Remember to add a cellular communicator so that you can use with system for monitoring service through Alarm.com. And don't forget about the desk mount!

3. 2GIG GC3e

2GIG offers an impressive high-end security system with their GC3e. It still retains a lot of similarities to the discontinued 2GIG GC3, while offering some new upgrades in its own right. Namely, the panel now supports the 2GIG eSeries Encrypted Sensors, and it offers a fresh redesign over its predecessor. Returning features to the GC3e include a 7-inch touchscreen, support for up to 100 wireless zones, 100 user codes, partitioning, integrated WIFI, and built-in Z-Wave Plus. Note that you will still need a cellular communicator to monitor the system and use it with Alarm.com. Interestingly, the system uses the same desk mount as the 2GIG GC2e.

2. Honeywell Lyric Controller

There are many reasons why we can confidently say that the Honeywell Lyric Security System is one of the best panels on the market today. It is one of very few panels (and currently the only one on this list) that can support Apple HomeKit. The Lyric offers a very impressive 128 wireless zones, 64 user codes, built-in Z-Wave, and a 7-inch touchscreen. You will have no trouble filling up the zones with Honeywell SiX Series Sensors, which offer military-grade 128-bit encryption! Other features include a built-in 2MP camera for disarm photos and ten (10) different chime settings.

The panel also comes with built-in WIFI, and unlike the other systems on this list, it can be monitored across IP only. Not only does this mean you do not need to add a communicator, you can use the Lyric on a less expensive IP-only monitoring plan. This is perfect for users looking to cut-down on monitoring costs. But you can still add a Lyric Cellular Communicator if you want. The Honeywell LCP500-DK is the recommended desk mount.

1. Qolsys IQ Panel 2 Plus

There is so much to like about the Qolsys IQ Panel 2 Plus as an apartment security system. It is sleek and modern with its thin profile and beautiful 7-inch touchscreen. You will love its built-in glass break sensor, integrated 5MP camera, and support for up to four (4) partitions. This is also the only system on the list that is dual-path ready right out of the box, as it has both an LTE communicator (AT&T or Verizon) and a WIFI card. You can even live-stream compatible Alarm.com Cameras right from the panel once you have connected the system with Alarm.com.

Other features include built-in Z-Wave Plus technology for smart home integrations, as well as integrated Bluetooth for optional automatic disarming. If that weren't enough, the system offers support for PowerG Sensors, as well as one legacy frequency (319.5 MHz, 345 MHz, or 433 MHz). The PowerG support is particularly useful, as PowerG Sensors utilize military grade 128-bit AES encryption and a wireless range of up to 2,000 feet away from the panel. This is way further than you will likely need in an apartment, but it's still cool nonetheless! A standard desk mount comes included with the system, but you can also purchase the Qolsys IQ Stand if you want something a little more robust. The Qolsys IQ Panel 2 Plus is without a doubt the pinnacle of apartment security systems in 2019.

Hi DIYers! We are happy to announce that Qolsys has released Firmware Version 2.4.2 for the IQ Panel 2 and IQ Panel 2 Plus. The update is available for any IQ Panel 2 or IQ Panel 2 Plus that is connected to WIFI and running software version 2.0.1 or higher. It can be applied via Patch Tag.

We never covered IQ Panel 2 Firmware Version 2.4.1, as there were supposedly major issues with that version. However, Qolsys quickly rallied, and they revamped the 2.4.1 upgrade into Firmware Version 2.4.2 instead. This update should improve system stability and general performance. It offers some key upgrades and improvements over Firmware Version 2.4.0. We recommended that anyone with a Qolsys IQ Panel 2 or IQ Panel 2 Plus upgrades to 2.4.2 as soon as possible.

The following updates are included in Firmware Version 2.4.2:

• An issue where the new IQ Remote (QW9104-840) would continue to produce Entry Delay beeps for a short period after disarming from the main panel has been fixed.
• The PG9309, PG9312, and PG9945 now have Reed Switch as the default selection for the Sensor Input field when enrolled remotely from Alarm.com.
• Disarm Photos can now be disabled for the IQ Remote Keypad.
• Camera Page can be disabled from panel UI. Doing this will automatically turn-off Disarm Photos, Alarm Photos, Alarm Videos, and Settings Photos
• The built-in panel glass break sensor can no longer be defined as a motion sensor when programmed remotely from Alarm.com.
• An issue where the panel time might display an hour earlier than the actual time has been fixed.
• Corrected a WIFI issue that occurred when using Alarm.com to request the system to scan for WIFI networks remotely.
• Can now receive consecutive doorbell chime tones when a SkyBell device is pressed multiple times during a single notification event.
• The randomized delay of 0 to 30 minutes when sending a panel software update from Alarm.com has been reduced to 0 to 5 minutes. This will speed up the process when updating from 2.4.2 to a higher firmware version that has yet to be released.
• Fixed an issue where the Thermostat Page could appear as blank.

There is no cost to update to Firmware Version 2.4.2 using a Patch Tag. This process can be complete on any IQ Panel 2 or IQ Panel 2 Plus running Firmware Version 2.0.1 or higher. The system should be connected to a WIFI network and be plugged-in and not have a low battery. The system will need to be actively monitored and have service with Alarm.com.

To apply the update, start by clicking on the small grey bar at the top of the main screen. Then choose Settings > Advanced Settings > enter Installer Code (default 1111) > Upgrade Software > Patch Tage > enter iqpanel2.4.2 > OK > Upgrade Using Network. The update should then begin to go through. It will usually take a few minutes for the update to finish. Do not power down the system during this time! Just be patient until the update completes. The system will power cycle as part of the update process.

The 2GIG GC3e is the flagship system from 2GIG, and it includes everything you could want in an alarm system. It features encrypted sensor support, partitioning, integrated WIFI, built-in Z-Wave Plus, and a beautiful 7-inch touchscreen display. The GC3e is very robust with its support for 100 wireless zones and 100 user codes. Just remember that a cellular communicator is needed to activate the system for monitoring and connectivity with Alarm.com. Once you add a cellular communicator, the system will be dual-path ready!

2. Honeywell Lyric Controller

The Lyric has been out for a few years now, but it is still one of our favorite security systems. It is the only panel on this list that offers compatibility with Apple HomeKit, and the only one of these systems that can be monitored through WIFI only. The panel features built-in WIFI, but you can add an optional LTE cellular communicator to make it dual-path ready. The Lyric is also the only system on this list that uses the Total Connect 2.0 platform instead of Alarm.com. Another benefit is that the Lyric has its own lineup of encrypted SiX Series Sensors. And you will love its 7" touchscreen. Other features for the system include support for up to 128 wireless zones, classic Z-Wave, 48 total user slots, a built-in 2MP camera, 10 chime settings, and so much more!

We recently discussed the end of Interlogix and how the company will soon be ceasing business in North America. We know that many users will be looking for a replacement for Interlogix Panels. Today, we will discuss how you can easily replace an Interlogix Panel with a Qolsys IQ Panel 2 Plus.

Interlogix Systems have been widely used in the security industry for many years. We want to start by saying that existing Interlogix Panels will continue to be supported by Alarm.com. As long as your Interlogix System has a compatible LTE cellular communicator, you can continue using the system well into the very distant future. And that is a perfectly acceptable option if you are looking for a cheap and effective solution for alarm monitoring.

But if you want to take home or business security to the next level, then now is a great time to upgrade to a Qolsys IQ Panel 2 Plus. This state-of-the-art security system offers fantastic features like automatic Bluetooth disarming, partitioning, live-streaming for compatible Alarm.com Cameras, built-in Z-Wave Plus functionality, support for up to 128 wireless zones, and so much more. And it is all controlled using a beautiful 7" touchscreen display.

These sensors use a rolling code encryption for added protection. These devices will make for a great addition to any 319.5 MHz IQ Panel 2 Plus!

We also understand that some users may be upgrading from hardwired Interlogix Panels, such as an Interlogix Concord 4 or an Interlogix NetworX Series Panel. Qolsys considered this, and they have a solution. The Qolsys IQ Hardwire 16-F is a wired to wireless converter that will allow you to use existing wired sensors with your new IQ Panel 2 Plus System. Just mount the IQ Hardwire 16-F in-place of the old panel, and enroll your existing sensors!

The IQ Hub represents the vision of Qolsys to bring home security closer and more accessible to the average consumer than ever before. This is truly the optimal system for any budget-conscious consumer who wants to bring state-of-the-art security and technology into their home. It is slated for a Q1 2020 release.

We do not have all the details on the Qolsys IQ Hub quite yet. But there is still a lot that we can talk about. The most obvious addition to the Qolsys IQ Hub is its prominent speaker on the front. Qolsys is expected to introduce some mind-blowing integrations for the system that will turn your alarm control panel into a compact entertainment center.

Remember that Alarm.com already offers an excellent Sonos integration. We are sure that the IQ Hub will take full advantage of this feature and truly put it to great use. Our team did get a chance to test the IQ Hub sound quality, and we can confirm it sounds just as good as any high-end portable speaker. This is highly impressive, and we expect many users to be thrilled that their alarm system can now essentially double as a party-starter.

The next aspect you will likely notice about the IQ Hub is its standout display screen. This is a 7" touchscreen display that appears to have even higher resolution than any existing security system on the market. We do not have the exact specifications on the screen just yet, but it certainly passes the eyeball test. And as you can see from the photo above, the slideshow feature returns. Get ready to show-off some of your best photos on the Qolsys IQ Hub!

As we mentioned earlier, Qolsys seems to be envisioning the IQ Hub as a way to make the home security market more accessible to the average consumer. The new system is not expected to replace the existing Qolsys IQ Panel 2 Plus, but it is anticipated to have a lower price point. We also expect many existing features to return to the IQ Hub, including built-in WIFI, Bluetooth connectivity, cellular LTE, and Z-Wave Plus functionality.

One thing that will not be returning to the IQ Hub is support for legacy sensors (e.g. 319.5 MHz, 345 MHz, and 433 MHz devices). The new system will be entirely PowerG, and you will need to use those sensors with the system. This is fine, as PowerG Sensors offer an impressive wireless range of up 2,000 feet when used with the IQ Hub in open air. They also utilize military grade 128-bit AES encryption in all their communication to ensure maximum wireless security.

Another interesting note about the panel is that it is not designed to be opened up. This is a significant change from most existing security systems, where you will occasionally need to open up the panel to make hardware changes. The battery on the IQ Hub is sled-replaceable, and it can easily be swapped out by the end user with little effort. All of the hardware is built right in, so you will never have to make any changes in that regard. Talk about DIY friendly!

Qolsys made other various enhancements to the IQ Hub System. They touted an improved integrated camera, and it can even double as a motion sensor by detecting changes in pixelation. We also expect this feature to be used in conjunction with Alarm.com so that you can take a peak-in at your home while you're on the go. You will also notice the LED light on the front of the panel. This light changes colors to let you know the current system status. How cool!

The system also features a built-in microphone that you can use to get alerts regarding loud sounds. You can even adjust the minimum sound level required to trigger alerts. This is perfect for parents who want to know if their baby is fussing or for owners of rental properties who may want to be alerted if their guests are throwing a loud party. It's just another way that Qolsys is working hard to keep you connected with your home.

We do expect that there will be some hardware limitations of the IQ Hub when compared with the IQ Panel 2 Plus, especially when you consider the anticipated lower price point. Qolsys most likely reduced costs by dropping legacy sensor support. It's also possible that the IQ Hub will support fewer zones than the IQ Panel 2 Plus (128 zones). But we cannot confirm the exact number of zone on the IQ Hub at this time. The IQ Hub is also slightly larger than the existing IQ2+ due to the added speaker.

As stated earlier, the Qolsys IQ Hub is scheduled for a Q1 2020 release. This groundbreaking new system is sure to make some big waves in the security industry, and we are confident that it will help many new users get their start with home security. We can't wait for its release, and we hope you're excited too!

Qolsys also unveiled another interesting product at the event, the Qolsys IQ Router. At first glance, you might be wondering what's the big deal. What's so exciting about an IP router? Well Qolsys packed in some game-changing features that are sure to make the IQ Router the perfect addition to your IQ Hub or IQ Panel 2 Plus System. It is sure to make your life more convenient in many ways. And we can also confirm, it is dual-band with support for 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz!

At the basic level, the IQ Router is exactly what it sounds like, an internet router. It replaces the existing router for your home's IP network. But what you get with the router is pretty ingenious. Any Qolsys IQ Panel 2 System or Qolsys IQ Hub connected with the IQ Router can be accessed remotely by your alarm monitoring company for programming purposes. This is similar to what the DSC Iotega offers. But with the Qolsys Systems, it is optional rather than mandatory.

Of course, if you don't want your monitoring company accessing your panel, then you can disable the feature. But it's pretty nice if you want assistance with programming new devices. One thing you will certainly love is its ability to auto-discover your IQ Hub System and automatically enroll it with your WIFI network. You can even configure your IP settings right from the IQ Hub. This truly makes the IQ Hub the central controller for your entire network!

Another innovation from the IQ Router is the ability to auto-enroll guest WIFI devices. In other words you can get any visitors on your WIFI network, without making them enter a long, tedious password. The way this works is that your guest will request to join the network from their IP device. You will then approve the request from either your IQ Hub or an app on your phone. And just like that, your guest will be connected with your WIFI network. Super convenient!

As you will notice, the Qolsys IQ Router only has one (1) LAN port for connecting a hardwired ethernet device. This isn't a big deal, as most users might not even need one. If you need additional ports, then you can easily connect a network switch to the router and use it however you would like.

But one very exciting feature of the IQ Router is its ability to support up to eight (8) WIFI extenders or access points. This makes it truly suitable for even large commercial locations! The router facilitates a total mesh network to help ensure that all of your IP devices stay connected across even an incredibly expansive area. Whether your needs are big or small, you are sure to get great use out of the new IQ Router! Qolsys states that it should be out by the end of this year.

We would like to end this post with some smaller product announcements we heard at the Qolsys Summit. A PowerG 360-Degree Ceiling-Mount PIR Motion Sensor called the PG9862 was unveiled. This sensor is perfect for use in closets or in commercial locations where corner-mounting is not feasible. The PG9862 is available from Alarm Grid now, and you can get it right here.

Lastly, we heard rumors about a much-anticipated PowerG Wired to Wireless Converter. This is huge news, as it will allow you to takeover an existing hardwired system and use a Qolsys IQ Panel 2 Plus or Qolsys IQ Hub in its place. And of course, all your hardwired sensors will enjoy the amazing range and security of the PowerG wireless protocol. We do not have any other details on the PowerG Converter at this time, but we will definitely keep our eyes peeled.
